Here is the latest from our Policies for Place initiative. We convened a bunch of interesting folks in Grand Rapids last June, and this is what they said about its unique public-private partnership model.
Mid-sized cities face a choice: grow together or grow apart. This new report, "10 Lessons in Public-Private Partnerships to Create Good Jobs," looks at lasting, broad-based prosperity.

The Upjohn Institute has studied tuition-free college programs for 20 years, starting with the Kalamazoo Promise in 2005. This work informed a movement that now includes 200+ programs. Read how research, collaboration and expertise helped inform this movement. #EduSky

@truesdale.bsky.social and I were happy to have @washingtonpost.com highlight our thoughts on Medicaid work requirements. There is even more cause for concern now the bill has become law. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Distressed to hear the #SocialSecurity admin will start witholding 100% of people's benefits if there is an overpayment, even if it is the fault of the SSA (which it often is). For now, only overpayments after 3/27 are included, and SSI is not affected. Since 3/24, repayments were capped at 10%.

I like tuition-free college that includes bachelor-granting institutions, as they provide meaningful choices. Minnesota's is simple and inclusive, with one drawback -- a benefit cliff at family income of $80K. Nothing wrong with a simple scale of declining benefits. www.minnpost.com/education/20...

"Many of the students using these scholarships already had their community college covered through Pell grants, but they didn’t know that," said @mmilleradams.bsky.social "So by saying, ‘Hey, it’s tuition-free,’ and putting that free message up front, you can bring a lot of people into the process.”

When it comes to clear communication, a promise that “community college tuition is free for all” wins, hands down, our @mmilleradams.bsky.social writes in an opinion piece.

A promise of guaranteed tuition coverage sends a clear message that college is affordable and is more likely to broaden the pipeline of students pursuing degrees or credentials.

New here and seeking connections. I've been a researcher at @upjohninstitute.bsky.social for 18 years, working first on KPromise & tuition-free college, and now on employment for young adults with disabilities. A political scientist by training, I enjoy hanging with economists and higher ed folks.
