Living in the Somme is quite an experience. The scars of the war are everywhere. Even the tiny ten-house village I lived in had a war graves cemetery at the end of the street.

I saved this from you two years ago but only just now am I laughing at the idea of the wall coming down as a reforms package. That’s one way of putting it…

The bit I remember most from looking at newspapers from just after the declaration of war in 1914 was “No Increase in the Price of Bovril!”
