Eeee! It’s in print! I have a poem in the September issue of #highlightshighfivemagazine and it is so thrilling to see it out there, and see Sarah Rebar’s super fun art for it too!
In true #kidlit reality-check, today my 2025 submissions got declined. #justkeepwriting #preschool #highfive

I'm gonna keep saying it:

AI is built on stolen copyrighted materials.

How can we teach our students that they have to cite their sources and shouldn't pirate materials and simultaneously teach them to use AI tools?

I really really need you guys to make a conscious rejection of generative AI tools part of your ongoing political resistance.

Don't use ChatGPT. Turn off Gemini. Don't read the AI results forced upon you at the top of Google search. Don't use AI art generators or support anyone who does. Please.
Oh please please i am begging, don't use generative AI for any reason if you can avoid it.

It's being marketed as a quick time-saver, but it's messy, inaccurate, it is putting entire industries of people out of work, and the environmental impacts (energy and water usage) are huge and debilitating.

No matter how many draconian measures they take to try and minimize their pitiful, weak, cowardly white male-ness, all the different kinds of people will still be here, fighting back and laughing at them ✊🏽 ✊🏼✊🏾

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

BATHE THE CAT text Alice B. McGinty, illus. David Roberts #kidlit 📚👍🏼 - Every character in this book is the best. Even the fish. It was so much fun to read aloud with kids who are starting to read and can jump in and enjoy the giggle-inducing word jumbled repetitions.

Cis people, here’s what you do:

Find your reps on house.gov & senate.gov. Write up a message. “I’m asking you to speak out against the EO cutting federal funds for gender-affirming medical care for transgender folks under 19.” Call or email each office & read/send your message. Now keep doing that.

So many talented creators this week receiving awards for their beautiful, significant, much-needed books.

But my #1 thought has been…
How many of these books are going to be banned under the current administration? And… what are we gonna do about it?

We had our 2nd SOUPFEST - friends come over and each brings a homemade soup, and I highly recommend the idea. My paprikash soup turned out delicious. We all sampled creamy spinach tortellini, potato, German sausage, French onion… an easy and cozy get together for friends. 🥣

I try to limit how often I check the news (esp U.S. news). Yesterday when I saw that the new administration was dismissing book ban complaints, I thought it was fake news. Sadly, I was wrong. 😢
