❤️ Portland

I celebrate Portland frogs. And sharks and hippos and dinosaurs and bunnies. The proliferation of blow-up costumes — ballooned into puffiness using tiny fans — offer an adorable clumsiness, parroting human movements in ways that are both human and not-human, delightfully. This creates dissensus …

“We have this game-changing resolution that will be a defining moment for Portland to change what community safety looks like,” said @counciloravalos.bsky.social, who co-sponsored the resolution w/ @councilorkanal.bsky.social & @councilormorillo.bsky.social

The vote will be close.

. @councilortiffany.bsky.social brought up parks director Adena Long to describe what’s at stake if parks were to be defunded:
May 22, 2025 at 7:51 PM
Movingly, @councilorkanal.bsky.social described parks as “the gap between surviving in this city and thriving in this city.” He went on to say that parks “make life a little bit better.”
May 22, 2025 at 7:42 PM
Important discussion of parks as public safety, as @counciloravalos.bsky.social described introducing her (successful) amendment with @councilormorillo.bsky.social to move a 2m police increase to the otherwise defunded parks maintenance.

“I didn’t study math and I know there are some PhDs up here, but 316 (million) and 316 (million) appear to me to be the same number” @councilorkanal.bsky.social. The @counciloravalos.bsky.social & @councilormorillo.bsky.social amendment shifted a 2m police budget *increase* to parks. It passed!

🔥”The status quo,” @councilormorillo.bsky.social said, “is inherently political.” Those councilors who fail to support Portland Street Response as a co-equal first response system over concerns that’s political “are having a hard time expanding (their) political imagination for what’s possible.”

The ICE facility and Tesla are next to each other in Portland, the obvious locale for dissent, and so many people are registering their dissent this spring afternoon

Banishment. Dedicated federal workers from their jobs. Trans people from federal govt. Cities banish people who are homeless through sweeps. Here, a home on the margins, a front window of an RV as a solarium. Even if people are banished, they are not vanished. h/t @julesboykoff.bsky.social

Not only am I re-visiting @naomiaklein.bsky.social 's 'disaster capitalism' to inform vigilance about the LA fire aftermath, but also, @julesboykoff.bsky.social's 'celebration capitalism,' since the Olympics are next. Profiteers loot public coffers and the poor lose.

One thing I’m sure glad I did this week: read @caseyparks.bsky.social’s *Diary of a Misfit.* Wow. Such patient storytelling that brought me closer and closer to each character in their glorious complexity. 🌞

📷 taken with permission after I chatted with this person who was pruning the butterfly bush next to his tent. He explained to me he was pruning it so it grows full in the spring and he can look at its health and say, “I did that!” #permaculture #gardening #pdxhomelessness #homelessness

*Kicking* by @julesboykoff.bsky.social will be published in 2025 (Duke Univ Press). Memoir + sports & politics critique (sportswashing, greenwashing, mega events, capitalism) — it’s a gem. I love Jules’ brain, stories, conviction, so I mapped how it moves as feedback
