My grandfather, who had one of the names in question, was actually born without a first name and his parents spoke little English at the time. He was bestowed his own English and official name in school due to its similarity to the Yiddish name his parents called him.

Hey, Irving — why are there so many Jews named Irving?
A mystery of nomenclature finally solved — in honor of all the Jewish Miltons, Seymours, Sidneys and Irvings out there.

I confidently declared the Blue Jays the odds-on favourites to win the World Series. It’s been a stressful week.

Taking a look at my grade 4 daughter's class newspaper, more kids (with bylines) have last names as first names, than traditional first names. This makes sense when most of the parents, like me, were usually called by their last name due to an abundance of kids with their own first names.

Kudos to the Dodger Stadium organist for playing "Just Can't Get Enough" in the bottom of the 15th inning.

TIL that Lady Gaga's that the song I knew as "You and I" is stylized as "Yoü and I." The original mix was co-(super) produced with "Mutt" Lange. The single has lots of great remixes, none as good as the original, but with some super awesome for the time remixers (Metronomy, Wild Beasts)

While Charlie Kirk's death is certainly shocking, an odd aftermath is seeing various local businesses expressing condolences. This is especially odd since I live in Canada and these same businesses did not express any public condolences upon the recent death of a local boy.

ok, so this article popped up for me and i have multiple concerns: a) I hope lil nas x is ok b) there is no 1100 block of Ventura Blvd in Los Angeles c) Lil Nas X rose to fame with "Old Town road" in 2019. I'm sure this "writer" took about 30 seconds to "write" the article, but sheesh!

The whole Epstein hubbub is largely due to Rupert Murdoch's long-standing feud with Ghislaine Maxwell's father. The right has always controlled the narrative on the matter. Fox appears to be turning on Trump.

Question: why does the gerontocracy think that a Democratic primary loss of someone who had to resign due to sexual misconduct is shocking? Or conversely, a primary victory of a kid with showbiz parents is shocking? Or is the gerontocracy disingenuous with their shock?

Neither I, nor any of the latest LLMs could figure out the theme of the most recent apocalypse trivia theme day. As long as LLMs cannot figure out that "georgia" "astro" "metro" "silver" and "king" can all be suffixed with "-dome" to name defunct stadia, we may be in the clear `

This festival isn't exactly up my alley, but I'm happy that they color coded the Culinary Stage poster, otherwise I'd have no idea if I would be watching Chef Aaron Sanchez or 2016 AL ERA Champion Aaron Sanchez cook.

I'm at my kids' elementary school dance and all of the kids are singing along to "i'm still standing," probably because they know it from "Sing." When i was growing up, it was almost never played on the radio, and my parents never owned any albums on which it appeared.

"And We Danced" by the Hooters is a phenomenal song. The album it comes from has some clunkers, so it's understandable that in an album-centric rock world, the Hooters never had the sort of reverence that say, the Replacements had. "Tim" doesn't have a single clunker.

This is my oddly-shaped riding, where I have lived in 3 separate homes, in 3 completely different areas that have very little to do with each other. This would normally be a slam dunk for the NDP, but Carney's strength and the National NDP's weakness complicates everything.
As in many ridings across British Columbia and Canada this election, in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke the discussion is about the rising cost of living, an uncertain future and who is best to stand up to threats from the United States. #CdnElxn2025
