Just saw a murder in Portland
Picture of the Oregon convention center and the bus stop next to it, lit up all pretty at dusk. there are >100 crows flying in the pic but it’s hard to see them, they are about the level of the power lines and slightly more obvious on the right, or west, of the picture, where there is still some daylight.

Fixed my kid’s backpack!
Close up of my kid’s backpack, which is mostly black but has some bright red abstract designs. Main zipper came off track; I snipped a couple coils off the side, got it back on, then sewed a new stop just above the missing coils. Replaced the pocket zipper with one that came off a bag of rice. It’s a weird single tape zipper that folds back on itself, but it was the right length to fit the pocket opening and I sewed a stop in so the word folded bit wouldn’t be a problem. I love reusing these zippers from rice bags - they’re bright pink and good for weird scrap projects, like the time I made a neck pillow that I could pack my pjs in and thus get a secret extra carry on when I went on a business trip

Happy anniversary to my beloved Seahawks, who on this day 46 years ago played an amazing turd of a game, the worst in nfl history

Behind 0-21 at the half, the Seahawks’ first play of the second half is a pass from quarterback Jim Zorn to Steve Largent, the future Pro Football hall of fame receiver. The play gains 11 yards - the only Seahawks first down in the game. When time runs out, mercifully, the Rams have a 24-0 victory and the Seahawks, then in their fourth season, have minus-seven yards. Back on my bullshit again

A sauce pan filled with peeled grape tomatoes simmering in a mix of brown and white sugar. It’s been simmering for a while so the ceramic on the interior of the pan has a lot of sticky residue going up the sides. I’m following a recipe from the Seattle times for “tomato dates” or something, i don’t recall the exact title

my dad brought back a hedge apple aka Osage orange from KS, look at this alien egg
A cosmic crisp apple (right) next to a hedge apple, also known as an osage orange (left), on a cutting board. The cosmic crisp is smooth and red with pale speckles and some lighter yellow around the stem, it is a good representation of the concept of “apple” and imo very tasty. it weighs about a pound or 450g. The hedge apple is a green oblate spheroid, with weirdly lobed flesh (it reminds me of wrinkly like a brain but the fruit is hard and the flesh is not loose enough to form wrinkles). The thing is probably an inch or 2.5 cm larger in diameter than the true apple, but weighs probably 3 pounds or 1.35 kg. Hedge apples are inedible to humans; they evolved in context with North American megafauna that would swallow the fruit whole and poop out seeds, which has the added benefit of providing a fertile soil for the new plant. After the extinction of the continent’s megafauna, Natives continued propagating the plant because it created thorny hedges and had good wood for making bows. (Another fruit that evolved in this same context is the avocado, only humans propagate it because it’s tasty.) Not sure why my dad decided to bring this back with him, but I am delighted by it (my sister apparently doesn’t remember these at all from our childhood). I spent a bunch of time as a kid trying to smash them, throwing them, general goofing, etc.

Somehow I had crazy good hair the other day before bed. But definitely not hot.

She has long side bangs that have a natural golden streak where they’re parted. She’s wearing a blue henley-style top and no bra. There’s a towel rack and a doorway to another room behind her. My hair is normally sort of wavy, but not like proper curls; I’d put it up in a messy bun while it was wet and let it there all day.

At home, had to work early today meeting with East coasters so I have been able to enjoy the whole game
A living room with a tv on showing cal Raleigh off the mariners at bat. There are shelves on either side of the tv, a couch across the room from where the picture was taken, and a round coffee table covered in my child’s art projects/otter boats (not sure why otters need boats but the child likes making them so have at it, kiddo). Behind the couch there is a window to the outside and you can see some redcedar boughs and wind chimes outside.

Went to the fancy nursery today, saw some good stuff and some dinos
A stone (or more likely cast concrete but idk) lighthouse or castle tower statue with a cute live native tree frog hanging out in the top window. It’s a bright green little guy who was very still until my kid came over and started waving at it, then it shimmied down the inside. I could just see one of its little hands splayed out, holding on. It is guarding a bunch of cyclamens below. Close up photo of a Sasquatch statue’s butt. He’s got some cake, like maybe his butt’s modeled after local hero cal Raleigh. It’s got a price tag wrapped around one leg but I was too busy making sure my kid did not pick up statues to look at the price A male peacock loafing in the sun on some sawdust in a coop. In the background there is a stump or log thing for them to roost on, along with Another peacock, who is running towards the first peacock and us, probably thinking humans = snack givers. But there are signs up everywhere saying not to feed them. Sorry lil buddy. This place is great to visit with kids especially on nice days because there are also chickens, ducks, geese, sheep and goats here, and you can buy local fruits and veggies. There are 2 here and they both hatched this spring and now they’re like 3’ tall. It was really funny when they were babies because they were in with all the chicken chicks of the same age, but towered over them. Baby emus have cute little stripes running from head to tail, but they’ve now matured enough to have dark gray/black all over. Their feathers look soft but I did not attempt to touch. even if it’s not forbidden, I wouldn’t want to because they have little spiky almost-teeth on their beaks. Dinosaurs, dude.

It is a nice day to sit in a sunbeam and stare blankly off into space
A scruffy small white dog sitting in the grass near a wood framed wire fence. There are plant pots on both sides of the fence (some have tomato cages, but not all are planted). The fence is atop a retaining wall; beyond it there is a redcedar branch hanging low on one side and a rusty roofed barn shaped shed next to a gravel path on the other. The dog is elderly and mostly blind, but this part of the yard is flat, empty, and completely fenced. He likes to take naps out here when the weather is nice. He was nodding off when I took the picture and laid all the way down and started snoozing just after.

Happy equinox
A pear tart with the extra dough made into an offset basket weave (3x4 strands) on one side and a scattering of leaf- and apple-shaped cookies (I brushed the cookie shapes with milk and sprinkled them with sugar before baking so they’re sort of sparkly and have carmelized on the edges plus a few more spots). The tart is sitting in its pan on a baking sheet because I just pulled it from the oven.

local Big Dumper love
A home made sign on the shoulder of the road (in the same style as a political year sign) that reads: Cal Raleigh for mvp. It’s hand lettered, with “Cal” in that cursive baseball font in green marker, “Raleigh” and “for mvp” are in all caps in black ink. There are some teal and yellow lines on either side of “for mvp” that underline his name, and there is a baseball with red stitching in the bottom right corner. There’s an illegible line at the very bottom of the sign- but that’s on me for taking a bad picture, not the sign maker’s fault. I took the pic from the passenger seat of a car over the dashboard so I wasn’t able to get a great picture, the whole thing is a little out of focus. There is a sidewalk and some shrubs in the background.

Two kids enjoying a pedal powered swing. Am adult man in t shirt, shorts and baseball cap is in a seat in the center with a geared pedal apparatus scavenged from a bicycle, connected to a black vertical pipe. About 8’ up there are two cross pieces perpendicular to it (like rotors on a helicopter) with a seat having from a chain at each end, so that there are 4 swings equally spaced apart. When someone pedals, it rotates and the swings start going outward, depending on how fast you pedal. In this case, he’s pedaling super slow and the two kids are hooting and screaming with joy.

Why is word summoning the ancient gods every time I scroll down then scroll back up

The top line should read something like “brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus” but instead it’s a bunch of wing dings or something. When I highlight it, word says it’s in the default font but it very clearly is not. What the fuck, word. The notes are pretty boring so I’m not including the full transcript, but this review (Dantas-Torres 2010) says brown dog ticks could be considered lowercase-c catholic so I have a note to myself that reads “should I draw a cute-ass lil tick with a pope-hat?”

oops all beige dinner

Oh no someone fell out of his bed!!
An elderly Maltese dog with shaggy white fur, lying on his side with only his feet on (not even in!) his bed. It’s okay though, he’s on a white shag rug that is also soft and cozy to sleep on. He’s blind and like a million in dog years so I’m never really sure if he intends to sleep all goofy or it just happened and he was comfortable enough. Just visible in the frame is a low fence we use to keep him in a small area with his bed and water (he gets lost in larger spaces, sometimes getting stuck in corners or by an object because he does not go in reverse). Also visible, a potty pad underneath the whole set up because sometimes accidents happen. He’s a sweet little old man and we love him and he can have all the cozy naps he wants.

Look at this dam sunset

The reservoir is silvery and reflects the pinks and oranges of the clouds. It’s very pretty and I wanted to make a pun with the word “dam” sorry not sorry!

Loot from the hot sauce festival
Two bottles of Ethiopian hot sauce made by qemem, a jar of chili onion crunch by Seattle Saigon, a plastic deli clamshell of sour patch kids style candies with taijin style salt on them by enchilositos, and a package of chocolate covered espresso beans (not spicy). All items are resting on a wooden cutting board that is on a granite countertop. A paper bag behind them is blocking the camera lens from capturing the mess of other random kitchen things that are also on the counter.

Saw some textile and fiber arts at the fair today
Needlepoint or cross-stitch that reads “My favorite season is the fall of the patriarchy” done in autumnal colors on a white background in a round hoop frame Hanging quilts, all very elaborate and brightly colored. The main one focused on here is the pink starfish (Patrick?) from SpongeBob on a teal background. He’s got on a bright green and purple speedo-type swimsuit bottom and a pair of black stiletto knee high boots A bunch of knit toys and dolls. My favorite, in the middle, is a tiny toy microscope - it’s monocular and has three different knit lenses with different colors around their rims like real life microscopes have to indicate different levels of magnification. There’s a baby yoda in the background but the microscope is what really caught my eye
