Keir Starmer’s spokesperson asked for the PM's response to Nigel Farage’s plan to deport hundreds of thousands of people living and working completely legally in the UK, replies that he thinks it is “unworkable” and “unfunded”.

So his objection is that they’ve got their sums wrong

Retrospectively removing indefinite leave to remain would be immoral and economically damaging. It would tear families apart.
Attacking it as ‘potentially illegal’ is completely beside the point.
Argue with the (awful) idea. Don’t try ’well, actually you can’t do that’.

An appalling attack on our neighbours, friends, family and colleagues - designed to pit worker against worker and prevent us from realising our common cause.

If the Labour government won't say it, we must: hands off our friends and neighbours!

Staggering naivety/cynicism (delete as appropriate) from Starmer. He asks us to treat transphobic politicians and activists as good faith contributors to a considered debate, they are not. They are designed to raise the temperature, turn the ratchet.

Conservatives have been meeting with big landlords to discuss how to thwart the renters’ rights bill.

Reform said in their 2024 manifesto that they would scrap the bill altogether.

The Tories and Reform are on the side of landlords. The Green Party stands firmly with renters.

I had this exchange with a friend last week: there are worse things than American liberal empire! Namely American illiberal empire!!

I think the failure to imagine that things can get worse is a really significant problem across the political spectrum (Bevins’s If We Burn makes this point, as well)

Someone should ask the people doing these briefings what it is they have wanted to do that has moved slowly and what things have been obstructed. The reality is they went into government with no clear agenda, got embarrassed fast, and are lashing out.
Above all, there is genuine shock amongst many people who have gone into government at just how bad things are, how slowly things move, the limits of power and the obstructiveness of systems. There is a lot of working out as they go along what needs to change about the way the state functions
