Seattle #Mariners ramblings & hack narratives. Occasional side bar on the Seahawks & Reign. Likes: 80's hair bands, Japanese culture, bourbon, & the EDRM.
A bit surprised Polanco resigned after the #Mariners didn't pick up his option. But I don't hate this. Polanco has always been a solid bat. Now, Polanco gets a chance to show '24 was an outlier.

It'd be interesting to know exactly what hitter profile the #Mariners are seeking for T-Mobile. Casas & Bregman are a no-go. I'd guess Alonso as well. Drayer believes its:

1. Huge exit velo hitters;
2. Foul line to foul line hitters w/ speed; or
3. Spray hitters.

Personally, I'd love more of #3.

At this point, Im pretty certain the Dodgers *claiming* they had interest in a one year deal for Kirby Yates but then deciding to give Tanner Scott 4/$72M is simply the Dodgers just trolling the rest of baseball.

The huge financial imbalance in baseball can no longer be ignored. Allowing a few teams the ability to run $400M or more payrolls bc of market - while the rest are *maybe* lucky to reach half that amount - is going to cripple fan interest. In fact, loss of interest has already begun. #MLB #Mariners

If I received a dollar every time a #Mariners fan told me the M's should spend like the Dodgers, and I had to remind them that the Dodgers - due to location - enjoy huge financial benefits that the M's & 90% of teams do not, I could give Stanton the full amount of $ needed to sign Bregman or Alonso.

Felix's career FIP:

'05: 2.85 (12 games)
'06: 3.91
'07: 3.75
'08: 3.80
'09: 3.09
'10: 3.04
'11: 3.13
'12: 2.84
'13: 2.61
'14: 2.56
'15: 3.72
'16: 4.63
'17: 5.02
'18: 5.18
'19: 6.00

'09-'14: a stretch of just 6 dominant seasons. Luv ya Felix, but 6 seasons isn't good enough for the HOF. #Mariners
There's great interest in seeing what percentage of the vote Felix Hernandez gets when the HOF ballot results are announced. The fascinating case for the longtime #Mariners ace will be at the forefront for pitchers of his era.

Any time the #Mariners pitching lab can pick up a few arms for free that throw mid to upper 90's, that's never a bad thing.
January 9, 2025 at 10:41 PM
This '28 lineup by BA probably plays a part as to how/why the #Mariners are managing their current payroll. If the M's project this same roster, the salaries of just Gilbert, Kirby, Raleigh, Julio, Munoz, Woo, & Miller would be north of $100M given arb costs & extentions for Raleigh & Gilbert.
January 9, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Given the glowing comments by Dipoto regarding Justin Turner & the impact he had on the team, it's kind of crazy the #Mariners not only have yet to sign him, but have been tied to about every other available 1B out there other than Turner.
January 8, 2025 at 3:50 AM
Would be interesting to know the internal considerations re: the #Mariners payroll moving forward. Over $31M is potentially moving off the books in '26 w/ Haniger, Garver, & Moore. Projected '26 payroll is $90M. M's seem adverse to add to that $90M. Perhaps M's are planning for a few extensions...

#Mariners send Brash, Haniger, Locklear, Harry Ford, Brandyn García & $5M to Tampa for Yandy Diaz & Brandon Lowe.

Given the cost for 2.5 years of Arozarena, it seems high. But Brash's fragility & Garcia's uncertainty sticking as a SP could make it fine.

Uptick in Luis Arráez chatter re: the #Mariners. I'm still of the belief that if you can move someone like Mitch Garver for Arráez, you do it. Keeping both Haniger & Garver just doesn't make sense.
Could Luis Arráez be a fit for the Mariners if the Padres look to trade him? Arráez doesn't walk, lacks power, & can't field. But I'd kinda love him at DH for the M's.

Padres need catching & 1B help. Arráez & Garver will make close to the same $$ in '25. Toss in a prospect or two... 🤷‍♂️

It just seems like the #Mariners road to trading Luis Castillo to fill needs will ultimately lead them back to Baltimore. Sometimes you can't escape destiny.

Mike Sirota, who is going to the Dodgers in return for Gavin Lux, was initially drafted by the Dodgers back in 2021 in the 16th round. He was a 3rd round pick by Cincy this past year, so it looks like LA used Lux to get someone who got away. If #Mariners were interested, it may not have mattered.
January 6, 2025 at 11:12 PM
Good lord. That didnt take long. #Mariners
If the #Mariners end up with Gavin Lux as a result of missing out on Hye-seong Kim, that would be a win in my book.

If the Hye-seong Kim tobthe Dodgers reports are true, perhaps Gavin Lux is now a realistic option for the #Mariners.
Reports of Hye-seong Kim signing with the Dodgers. Not great for the #Mariners. If true, it will be interesting to see who the M's pivot to, and how quickly.

Still say Arenado makes a good deal of sense for the #Mariners (assuming he accepts a trade). If the Cards take on a contract or eat some $, Arenado would fit within budget & bring what the M's want: defense, bat-to-ball skills, & proven veteran leadership.

A lot of the criticisms/predictions about Hye-seong Kim possibly joining the #Mariners is very akin to fan sentiment when the M's were bidding on Ichiro. Not that Hye-seong Kim will be Ichiro. But interesting, nonetheless.
January 2, 2025 at 10:24 PM
The #Mariners signing Hyeseong Kim would be a nice start to the offseason. They will have acquired their Hoerner or Donovan w/o sacrificing prospects or starting pitching. Next, resign Turner for 1B/DH & then figure out 3B.

The apparent #Mariners offseason plan:

1. Full seasons from Randy & Victor.
2. Edgar/Seitzer getting bounce backs from Julio, Garver, Haniger, &/or JP.
3. Moore/Bliss/Young at 2B.
4. Don't panic in finding a suitable 3B & platoon 1B.
5. Pitching, pitching, pitching.

It may be all that's needed.
