Aw, I love this version of Emma! Jonny and Romola had such good rapport! Their bantering scenes are some of my favorites from any Austen adaptation. I think it may be time for another rewatch...

Anyway, I'm going to listen to the rest of the Reclaiming Jane Sanditon episodes regardless. Wish me luck! If I have to come back here and make a retraction, I'm happy to do so!

I guess not everyone can be as crazy and obsessed as the fans, but I sometimes feel it's a shame that people who are actually well-versed in the show aren't the ones making these podcasts.

Sorry, I know this is a shadowboxing rant, but I needed to get this off my chest. Anyone else have similar frustrations? I think what bothered me most was that a lot of their critiques were valid, while the others were totally invalidated through errors and inconsistent arguments.

Basically, they like the things that are NOT Austen-like, but also complain that the show isn't Austen enough. Make it make sense!

We see them in lots of Austen works. Side characters whose purpose it to provide comic relief (in Arthur's case) or snooty, snobby, Miss Bingley-types like Esther Denham. I've read the Sanditon fragment multiple times and nothing in it suggests that Esther or Arthur would get arcs.
November 15, 2025 at 1:38 AM
So you want it to be Austen, but then when it is, you don't want that. Riiiight. Also, they love the character arcs of Esther and Arthur (don't get me wrong, I love those too) but those are the least Austen character arcs of any in the show. Those characters in the fragment are stock characters.

The melodrama and cliffhangers are there because it's a tv show. If it were based on a completed novel, it would feel very different. So far I agree with them. But then they raise an aspect of the show which is based on Austen, namely that first impressions can be wrong, and they don't like that.

Maybe they were conflating S2 with S1? Another gripe is regarding their opinions of the show's tone. I agree with their assessment that the show doesn't feel like Jane Austen. Of course it doesn't. It's not based on her work, and it's written as a tv show first and foremost. The pacing is for tv.

You'd also think he'd spent the whole season shouting at her and belittling her. Like I said, he raises his voice 1 time (at the garden party) and never once belittles her. Disagreeing with some of her philosophies does not equal insulting her. I'm honestly trying to figure out what the hosts meant.
November 15, 2025 at 1:38 AM
The hosts didn't like that they were in conflict in a lot of scenes. Totally fair. But the way they described the interactions was wild. If you'd never seen the show, you'd think CH and AC were punching each other in the face all the time. Insane!
November 15, 2025 at 1:38 AM
A few of my gripes: Describing CH's S2 interactions with AC (when 9 times out of 10 they are calmly conversing, but happen to be on opposing sides of a particular matter) as "knock-down, drag-out fights." Excuse me? He raised his voice to her 1 time and she did the same to him 1 time.

The number of so-called Sanditon podcasts that get things wrong in their recaps or discussions is starting to really grate on me. I'm not talking difference of opinion, I'm talking factual errors or insane omissions of crucial plot points. In this case, ignoring large parts of Charlotte's storyline.
November 15, 2025 at 1:38 AM
Listening to their coverage of Sanditon the show (caveat, I've only listened to Seasons 1 and 2 so far) has only reinforced my desire for a podcast made by Sanditon fans who can bring their deep knowledge of the show (characters, script, plots, timelines, etc.) to bear.

First off, if you are a #JaneAusten fan, I think this podcast is super fun. The hosts seem pretty well versed in Austen's work and they bring some really interesting ideas and angles. One of them is a historian and offers some fascinating insights. I'd definitely recommend the podcast. That said...

Aw, poor little rich Lady Denham!

I just clocked the dress Alison is wearing in this scene...isn't it one that we saw Charlotte wearing in S1? If so, what a brilliant costuming choice! It makes so much sense that Alison would wear Charlotte's hand-me-downs!

Awww! Luna knew from the start that Charlotte was the one!
September 16, 2025 at 6:51 PM
This scene cracks me up. Mrs. Wheatley is tattling on Charlotte for being late, and Mr. C doesn't give a sh*t. Then he's like "brace yourself" because these feral children will make your life a misery. Luckily Charlotte is unfazed by everything. This entire household will soon be under her spell!

How do the writers of the tv adaptation use elements from this chapter as seeds for their own continuation of the story? What big commonalities and differences did you notice between the show and the text?

Charlotte witnesses Clara and Sir Edward having a hidden tete-a-tete in the grounds of Sanditon House. We already know Sir Edward’s intentions towards Clara, but what does this meeting tell us about Clara’s motivations and schemes? Is she the innocent heroine she’s been painted to be?

At last the much-discussed Sidney Parker appears in the flesh! He seems to make little impression upon Charlotte, but what impressions are we the readers left with? What, if anything, is promised by his introduction?
