What are those SVs? Seemingly not coding sequences. Instead, up to 75% of SVs overlap with TE insertions, especially DNA, LINE, and LTR TEs! These findings support a view of TEs as a major source of genetic variability in African cichlids.

To complement these estimates, FX has used 8 long read genomes representative of major eco-morphological groups in the Lake to create a pangenome of Lake Malawi cichlids. This approach revealed between 4.73-9.86% of interspecies sequence difference attributable to SVs
