Keep recording them... for later. They leave a paper trail a good lawyer can find them with. Pardons may keep them out of prison, but won't stop civil suits.

I believe scientists have actually been quite wise to anticipate and work toward fusion, because fusion is physically possible. No laws of physics/chemistry are violated by fusion. It already exists. The stars are doing it! The constraints are known! The research is excellent!
In 1975 scientists thought nuclear fusion power was only 30 years away. Things didn't quite work out that way, but with recent advances, scientists today think it may be as little as 30 years away.
