When Faramir, Éowyn, & Merry need help from the Houses of Healing, there is no charge for the service. Aragorn and the healers healed because it's the right thing to do when anyone is sick or hurt, and because the place of healers in Gondor was respected & supported. This is how this should work.

The reality of nature is abundance. Depriving anyone of this bounty is a derangement. The earth would give every little person plenty to eat if a few confused and hurtful people stepped aside and sought help for their tragic misunderstanding of life.

Observing All Saints' Day today with a study of Tolkien's Confirmation saint, St. Philip Neri who was filled with hobbit-like humor, inspired elf-like music, and cared for Rome's most exploited folk with great mercy. His founding of the Oratorians gave #Tolkien a second home in his orphaned youth.

Farmer and Mrs. Cotton are some of my favorite hobbits because of the way they feed the Gaffer during colonization of the Shire by ruffians. They take care of the poor and the elders. Choices!

October the 24th! Frodo awakens safe at Rivendell and then is lead by Sam through the high garden to the East Porch where Gandalf, Merry, and Pippin await him. Faithfully based on Professor Tolkien's own paintings and drawings of Imladris, but in reverse view. #Tolkien #TolkienArt

Every fall, I enjoy the Lothlórien effect that Frodo experienced - one of those gifts of fairy-stories #Tolkien cited of seeing the primary world with refreshed eyes. The golden poplars in my neighborhood become the Mellyrn! Or at least, mementos of their splendor. Truly, it is a gift.

I can't think of a better choice! He and Vermeer at the the top of my list. Something a bit fun, if you look at this portrait I did of my parents in their youth, you may see it is also a tribute to Sargent's Lady Agnew.

Very honored that my book, The Art of Mercy in Middle-earth, received a favorable review from Nancy Martsch in the respected Beyond Bree Newsletter. I especially appreciated her praise of my hobbits and lighting, as well as my more painterly than graphic approach. Very thankful! #Tolkienbooks

Happy weekend, #Tolkien friends. No new paintings to share today, but I am studying the Oxford Oratory and, for a moment, looking at this front door, I felt as if saying "Speak friend and enter" might cause it to open. Do you see what I see?

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit:

The core Tolkien theme of hospitality continues today as the hobbits arrive at The Prancing Pony where the host takes great care of their comfort. In Middle-earth, gracious folk welcome and serve the wanderer. One by one, they contribute to victory.

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit:

By the 20th century, hobbits had become hard to find, but once the Big and Little Folk lived side-by-side at Bree. To me, a better modern Middle-earth would be a return to a Bree-like coexistence, with hobbits feeling free to come out of hiding.

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit

Tonight the hobbits will eat their second supper with Tom and Goldberry, where dance, song, and laughter turn simple food and water into a feast. A celebration of earth, rain, and the hospitality of nature. Everyone belongs at this table.

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit:

Merry's hobbit ponies know a friend when they see one, and here they react with joyous vigor to the arrival of Tom Bombadil, who knows their names. I'm so glad Tolkien lets us know these ponies make their way back to Tom after fleeing from Bree.

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit

Even on a dark road, hobbits still sing in their baths. It says something about who they are, even when some of the world around them is out of step with their goodly, kindly ways. They are little lights.

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit:

After his night amongst Gildor Inglorion's folk, Sam awakes with new gifts that are apparent to Frodo...rather as readers do on each subsequent read of The Lord of The Rings. Spending time with elves can broaden the sense of what is possible here.

Today's #Tolkien #HobbitDay #HobbitMonth Tidbit:

Tonight, the hobbits will have this first "more than chance meeting" and I've spoken to many fellow readers for whom this scene is a major contributor to why The Fellowship of The Ring is their favorite. It is truly enchanting!
