I’m very much against writing off tropes completely. There’s a reason why the majority of riveting stories have similarities. Tropes can be immensely helpful tools for developing a strong story, as long as they’re used as a starting point and not as an end goal!

Authors tend to write for their peers. If they don’t want to challenge themselves to work beyond the limitations of their tropes, they’ll write for people who don’t want to be challenged to read beyond those limitations either. It’s an ouroboros.

And yes, this is a direct response to the dire state of the fiction publishing scene. Books being promoted based on their tropes instead of their plot or characters is a symptom of a much larger problem.

Especially with GenAI poisoning the waters, the absence of human creativity is palpable.
