Social Democracy, Sewer Socialism, Left-Abundance. All opinions here have been extensively poll-tested and are therefore correct. He/him
against him is not all that strong and is not likely to move many offline people, especially in a place like ME. I could be wrong or more damning stuff could come out and I am free to change my mind if that happens. But I have not seen enough to say we need to write this guy off asap.

from ever running for office within the Dem party? And if so, what does that mean for our persuasion efforts to voters who may have views that differ from our standards on such issues?

As I said, I am totally fine with someone other than Platner running and winning, but the current case...

To answer your question, if a candidate shows no sincere remorse or growth from their past bigotry than that is disqualifying. I don't see that as the case here.

To flip this around, how can someone who has such a past ever redeem themselves in your eyes? Should these people be barred...

The Blackwater thing is more of a red flag than anything here.

I don't see him approving of ss tattoo at all, just acknowledging that different military units have weird often dumb symbolic rituals.

I reiterate the main point, the case that he is a secret nazi is really weak so far.

Sorry, I honestly didn't see this new development. Some additional context would be helpful.

learned about its meaning is an open question. I fully believe he did not know when he got it. If he knew at some point before recently and didn't fix it, then yeah that is a problem for me, but I have seen nothing definitive that is the case.

Genuinely curious, what is the issue with Fenrir here?

Happy to support another viable candidate, I just want to win the seat. We will see if anyone else has the juice to do so at this stage.

I myself didn't know about the symbolism of that skull until a few days ago and I honestly thought I knew a decent amount about that stuff. When Platner...

Running statewide incumbents for fed races is often a smart move, but not always. Maybe Mills is the most electable candidate in the race, maybe not. Until we see more data, I think a healthy degree of skepticism in all directions is fair. Especially given Mills low approval ratings and age.

some grace to people who are willing to see the errors of their ways and join our cause. We need all the people we can get.
October 23, 2025 at 7:23 PM
only regret getting caught. They are genuine racists. I don't think it's fair at all to lump Platner in with them. A person should be given a fair chance to repent and grow from any past bigoted views. Maybe he lets us all down, I don't know what the future holds, but we can and should offer...

How do I have lower standards? Is your argument here that Platner is a full on unrepentant racist? You are entitled to think that, I don't share that view. He said some clearly dumb things and has by all indications become a very different person in the years since. These nazi types on the right...

I'm explicitly arguing that the fact that she is a governor who is not that popular (by any relative sense), is why she is more risky than she appears. If she were popular that changes things. And yes, I think age could be an issue here. Mills is literally older than Collins, that is a problem.
October 23, 2025 at 6:51 PM
For sure. If more comes out about Platner, especially if it weakens his case in the general, I think it would make sense to find an alt candidate. But until that happens I think the primary should play out with minimal party intervention. This is why primaries exist in the first place.

likely to reaffirm many of the most damaging aspects of our party's brand (old, sclerotic, cautious, and overly friendly to the status quo). Our risk-aversion has become a risk unto itself and we should at the very least be aware of that.
October 23, 2025 at 5:48 PM
Giving candidates like Platner a fair shake to prove themselves is obviously important for its own sake, but especially in cases like this critical ME Senate race. Where the party establishment wants to put its thumb on the scale for a lifelong party insider who isn't that popular and is more...

if we tell a lefty candidate that you aren't allowed in because of something you said in your past, no matter how sincere your apologies are today, but then prop up candidates from the other side who spent years using siding with welfare queen tropes and other commonplace conservative ideals.
October 23, 2025 at 5:48 PM
all sorts of center-right folks who have spent years saying horrific things about Dems and more importantly Dem voters into the tent for the sake of growing the tent to the right. Fwiw, I am not against this, I just think we need to be growing the tent in all directions. It sends a shit message...
October 23, 2025 at 5:48 PM
Dems don't need to forgive every bad decision or statement from someone's past, but we do need to allow space for redemption for candidates, and by extension, voters. If people think we won't accept them back no matter what, we are shrinking the tent. To add insult to injury here, we are allowing...

Beyond the questions of the race itself or the usual left v center intraparty squabbles, I do think it matters that we allow space for anti-establishment candidates to test themselves in primaries, especially in places like ME, where heterodox politics are pretty common.
October 23, 2025 at 5:48 PM
If Mills were clearly a safe choice, I think we could be having a different convo, but I view winning this seat as the most important thing. The scandals Platner has faced thus far are more likely to hurt him in a primary than a GE. Who is the strongest GE candidate should be the main question
October 23, 2025 at 5:48 PM
Twitter only gave them a slightly more public space to egg each other on. As a white guy who has spent my life around other white guys in small towns & suburbs, I can say this has 100% always been par for the course with conservatives of all ages. The difference now is that it has become more brazen
