The 8 weeks of aerobic exercise training increased muscle fiber capillarization. However, this did not result in greater muscle fiber hypertrophy during the subsequent 12 weeks of resistance exercise training.

Before and after each intervention period, we assessed muscle fiber size and capillarization (and much more, see figure and full paper for details).

The main study of my PhD is now online!

We investigated whether 8 weeks of aerobic exercise ‘preconditioning’ (to improve muscle fiber capillarization) augments muscle hypertrophy during subsequent resistance exercise training in older adults.

This decrease in microvascular blood volume was strongly related to a lower post-prandial amino acid incorporation into muscle protein.

Post-exercise cold-water immersion greatly reduced (-60%) muscle microvascular blood volume immediately following immersion and remained lower up to 3 hours following cooling.

We used contrast-enhanced ultrasound to quantify muscle microvascular perfusion before and at multiple times after water immersion.

In addition, participants ingested an amino acid tracer to assess amino acid incorporation into muscle tissue during recovery.

We used a within subject design wherein one leg was submerged in cold water (8 degr) while the other leg was submerged in thermoneutral water (30 degr) for 20 min. Before water immersion, participants completed a bout of resistance exercise for the lower body.
