We've also had the tech to reprocess waste fuel efficiently and build the fast breeder reactors needed to close the fuel cycle since the 60s with the EBR-2 and IFR programs developed at Argonne national labs. We have the ability to transition to carbon free electricity and address waste fuel now.

Not at all what I said. We could do all nuclear but nuclear + renewables makes more sense, especially for peaking. We already have substantial renewables in place and with fracking and deep bore drinking, geothermal is more accessible than ever.

I'm pushing it because it's capable of competing with coal and gas on a watt-for-watt basis. One nuclear plant means you can shut down 1 or 2 gas or coal plants. They have a better capacity factor. It's simple math.

Store it in giant steel and concrete casks where it can sit and cool. Or do the actual smart thing and reuse it in fast breeder reactors. Waste from water cooled reactors still has 95% of it's original energy content.

We can completely replace fossil fuels in electricity generation though. Nuclear power is carbon free in operation and can directly replace coal and gas plants.
