Design engineer, artist, not as young as I used to be.
I’ve been working on a series of characters lately, (slowing down a little lately, but I’ll be finished soon,) and here’s one from the middle of the group. For me, Jyn Erso represents all of the women I see resisting fascism and inhumanity right now. “This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.”

In the middle of, well, everything, here’s another drawing of one of my favorite Black Marvel Comics characters. This is Joe “Robbie” Robertson, editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle newspaper, created in 1967. He’s smart, honorable, and a great friend, and he definitely knows that Pete’s Spider-Man.

This is Adam Brashear, the Blue Marvel, created in 2008, but with an origin story that goes back to 1959. He’s a scientific genius, and could be Marvel’s version of Superman if they chose to use him that way.

Next up is Misty Knight, private detective, crime fighter, Daughter of the Dragon, and Marvel’s first female Black superhero. Created in 1975, she frequently appeared with Luke Cage and Danny Rand, (Iron Fist,) and shared the first interracial kiss in mainstream comics with Danny in 1977.

I spent February (and part of March) drawing some of my favorite Black characters from Marvel Comics. The first one is Sam Wilson, Captain America, created in 1969. As The Falcon, Sam was the first African-American superhero in Marvel Comics history, and the most recent to get his own movie.

More art. The Marvel mutant metaphor, of marginalized people who stand together against a world that hates and fears them, is more relevant than ever. Xavier couldn’t see which way the wind was blowing.
