My summary of global climate policy
If you haven’t read ‘1984’ by George Orwell now is the time! The Ministry of Truth ever changing history and facts to suit. Friends becoming enemies in permanent war. The U.K. becoming ‘Airstrip One. Political apathy. Orwell was right - only 40 years too soon.

If your business doesn’t REDUCE what society grows or makes or burns or destroys then no amount of ESG greenwash can make it sustainable!

Beginning to wonder. Is it time to shift our world view from US and friend to US as the enemy? Disturbing thought

Anyone else find @eventbrite.bsky.social unbelievably complex and demanding. Someone bought me some tickets. I just want to download them to my Apple wallet. I don’t want an account. I don’t want to host events. I don’t know how to answer half the questions it asks.

Any heat pump geeks know how to translate Vaillant’s ErP data on seasonal energy efficiency into a U.K. SCoP? If I assume a PEF of 2.5 (is that correct for UK given this is a German company?) they still quote for ‘colder climates’ and ‘warmer climates’ without any data to tell you what that means.

Someone who thinks a successful climate policy is a political problem shouldn't be in the cabinet, or the Labour Party
🧵Great @shippersunbound.bsky.social piece to set up the politics of 2025. But these two quotes - one I think right on the winter fuel mistake, one dead wrong on Ed Miliband, highlights why they’ve made some early strategic mistakes - too many I think are stuck in politics of 1997 and 2010

There is no world where we solve climate change without consuming less, including driving less. No amount of magical paint can make a car move without substantial external energy input. Ride a bike!
This solar paint tech could lead to nearly unlimited EV range
A new type of solar paint could give electric vehicles almost unlimited range, at least in places where the sun shines a lot.

A New Year’s Resolution for Society.

Let’s keep clear the difference between Opinions (matters for policy and debate), Beliefs (things you think are true but lack hard evidence), and Science (things for which there is overwhelming evidence and could kill you if you ignore them: like climate change)

Such a sad article. Firstly it mocks (rightly) an EPC system that penalises shift from gas to electric. But then it makes the errors of 1) saying heat pumps only work in new buildings. Complete bollocks! 2) it ignores WHY we need heat pumps - to save planet, not money.

If the EU is ‘oh so powerless’ and inconsequential, how come then that Musk, Putin, Trump are all so eager to weaken it? What is it that makes it so meaningful to them and that many EU Citizens seemingly can’t see?

If you care about climate, her’s a list of people with the courage peacefully protest about the way government is failing. They’re all now serving sentences.

The list contains emails & addresses. They’d love to be cheered up over Xmas. Drop them some kind words.

The best climate news of the year is possibly not what you imagine!

Ozempic et al. will kill overeating in the rich world. Food production will drop, and with it the massive climate and biodiversity impacts of agriculture. Rarely has there been an invention as good for people as it is for planet.

Does anyone here who knows about heat pumps have a view of R290 as a refrigerant?

We’ve used it and plan to use it again but I’m hearing stories of problems with defrost cycles. Are they real or just the supplier not having suitable kit? Anyone any ideas?

According to the Express, magpies are "hooligans" & "instinctive killers" best controlled by using pesticides to kill their insect prey. Against stiff competition, possibly the worst piece of journalism I've seen. www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1984...

Climate *consequences* are escalating

A key strategic question is: will consequences get in the way of our efforts tackle the *causes* of climate change

They don't have to - but that requires planning

A ‘doom loop’ of climate change and geopolitical instability is beginning
Climate change is driving inflation and instability, which harms climate action. But it’s not too late to escape the doom loop.
