This is 1526 in England. I'm not sure what liturgical literature (right term?) would be involved. Was just the New Testament in circulation? (3/3)

On evangelist, the OED says 'A copy of, or a volume containing, the Gospels, esp. when used as an object to swear on in taking an oath'. So, he was swearing on the New Testament that could have been in the whole Bible? (2/3)

Yes. At least the unfair access to Latin learning for state schools compared to private schools was somewhat acknowledged.

Maybe Wigglesbottom Primary book series by Pamela Butchart, or the Claude series by Alex T. Smith? They are both funny with a good balance of text and illustrations. Also, Claude is a dog who wears a beret!
