Hiya, just arrived.

I research, teach, & write about how people make communication technologies. In doing so, they often reveal what they think “expression”, “journalism”, & “the public” mean.

I crave media systems that fight climate collapse, technocratic power, & fascism.

Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.

“‘Behind the scenes, we were desperately hoping that USC and OpenAI could come to an institutional level agreement about the use of AI on campus, and we did that.’”

CBC:

- quickly concludes emails “appear to reveal nothing new or substantive connecting Epstein” to T;

- foregrounds “AI-assisted search” tool “that converts image files into searchable documents” (?)

How exactly does “AI” support “nothing new” finding?

Kinda muddled.

I mean, sure, nice idea.

A more interesting essay (from these authors in particular) would be:

“Why Did We Ignore Voices That Continually Told Powerful People Like Us Not To Build AI Like We Have — And What Does This Teach Us About How Power & Money Work In U.S. Universities?”

That’d be a banger.
"The question is whether we will rebuild the institutions of open science that made AI possible in the first place — or instead allow them to be eroded by concentrated commercial power."

“Cloud infrastructure from American companies, whether located in Europe or Canada, is incompatible with sovereignty…These companies fall under US jurisdiction &, therefore, are subject to the 2018 CLOUD Act, which enables US authorities to access data they hold, even if that data is stored abroad.”
Canada is waking up to the risks of relying on US tech giants for its digital infrastructure, writes Emily Osborne. As Canada pursues a sovereign cloud, clarity and control —not marketing—should guide the path to digital independence.

It should be an ugly monument to an ugly time, a constant reminder of this era’s failures.

The constant human violence doesn’t seem to sink in, maybe this will.
