something I'm surprised gen AI discourse didn't hit yet is the attitude "I asked for it to be done, so I made it" has always been how rich people view using workers who have trained skills and do the technical side. they see themselves as creators for having an idea, we were just a means to that end

Just received my Bits & Bops key from Kickstarter !

This is the first game I have ever backed on KS, but @tempolab.games released an outstanding demo that showed :
- their love for Rhythm Heaven
- their technical expertise (music sync and input handling are top-notch)

It is not misconduct to unionize, and I hope that Rockstar and Take-Two face serious legal challenges for what seems to be a very clear-cut case of union-busting.

I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.
Ethan Evans, former Amazon VP As VP of Prime Gaming at Amazon, we failed multiple times to disrupt the game platform Steam. We were at least 250x bigger, and we tried everything. But ultimately, Goliath lost. Here's why: The 15+ year long attempt to challenge Steam started before I was VP of Prime Gaming, but we never cracked the code. Not under my leadership or anyone else's. The first way we tried to enter the online-game-store market was through acquisition. We acquired Reflexive Entertainment (a small PC game store) and tried to scale it. It went nowhere. Then, after buying Twitch, we created our own PC games store. Our assumption was that gamers would naturally buy from us because they were already using Twitch. Wrong. Finally, we built "Luna," a game streaming service that let people play without a high-end PC. Around the same time, Google tried the same thing with their product "Stadia." Neither gained significant traction. The whole time, Steam dominated despite being a relatively small company (compared to Amazon and Google). The mistake was that we underestimated what made consumers use Steam It was a store, a social network, a library, and a trophy case all in one. And it worked well. At Amazon, we assumed that size and visibility would be enough to attract customers, but we underestimated the power of existing user habits We never validated our core assumptions before investing heavily in solutions. The truth is that gamers already had the solution to their problems and they weren't going to switch platforms just because a new one was available We needed to build something dramatically better, but we failed to do so. And we needed to validate our assumptions about our customers before starting to build. But we never really did that either. Just because you are big enough to build something doesn't mean people will use it

I've received 100+ replies like this, claiming game revenue goes directly to executives & shareholders. So I checked & made this chart.

This is what happens when you buy a $69.99 game from EA, the company with the WORST reputation in the industry.

0.8% goes to c-suite. 53% goes to devs & workers.
A detailed table explains how a $69.99 purchase of a AAA video game is allocated across different cost categories. It has four columns: “Bucket,” “What it pays for,” “% of your payment,” and the dollar value out of $69.99. Eight spending categories are listed: Labor costs for individual contributors and middle management – 53.2% or $37.23: salaries, bonuses, and benefits for ~13,400 engineers, artists, QA, producers, sales, and support staff. C-suite compensation – 0.8% or $0.56: salary, bonus, equity awards, and benefits for the CEO and five other named executive officers. Storefront & platform fees / hosting & payment costs – 7.0% or $4.90: fees to distributors like Steam, Sony, and Microsoft; data-center and bandwidth costs; manufacturing for physical units. External dev tools & outsourcing – 10.0% or $7.00: engine and middleware licenses, motion-capture studios, co-development and localization contracts. Paid advertising & promotions – 4.0% or $2.80: media buys, influencer deals, trailer production, and esports sponsorships. Other overhead (non-labor) – 3.0% or $2.10: office leases, insurance, legal and audit fees, depreciation. Taxes & interest – 5.0% or $3.50: corporate income tax and financing costs. I don’t talk about it much because the situation doesn’t really change but it’s still insane to me what an enormous amount of really talented game developers are out of work. just whole studios worth of incredible people, often people who worked on beloved games, unemployed.
