Who else's core suddenly took a huge hit in September? 😬
Yes, it's 9:30, but there should be someone on a few of the systems...

Obligatory Northern lights report. Visible outside of Boston

It is always great to see the dissertation of a super user. We often don't see the whole picture of a project in the core.

A response to a new story saying Watson didn't credit Franklin. Tells you a lot about how the public sees scientists in general and women scientists in general 😡

Got to check out the MBF "SLICE" this morning. It's so little, I wish I had a banana for scale 😂

Obelia hydroid colony from Carolina Biological Supply Company.
Taken with a 25x/0.8 objective. 20 tiles, 103 "planes" with the Zeiss Lightfield 4D.
If you're in the Boston area, come see us at the HCBI!

Lightfield 4D has landed at the HCBI. If you are in Boston, come check it out!

For those not in Boston, enjoy this GIF of a hydra moving around with a z-depth coded LUT

Our cryo-EM is beginning installation. It sat in crates for a long time because funding cuts made it so we couldn't renovate the intended room. We found a place for it with minimal renovation needs.
Now hoping we can hire an expert instead of LM people trying to do it...

I learned to crochet "Disco Fred" because I do best keeping my hands busy. The poor thing looks deformed, but I'm sure my first slide was rough, too 😄

What is something (surprising)about science that you didn't know about coming in. Mine is the number of times a week I have to go "righty tightly, lefty loosy" due to use of wrenches and screw drivers

My plan was to fill this out each month. So new for September would be Lightfield coming. Any upcoming events are simple enough. User publications I pulled for this month, but I was going to make a form for people to fill out. Telling 700+ people you have a publication might motivate them

After adding this a year ago, we stopped having salty water spills on the SpectraPhysics InSight x3+ laser

Has anyone ever seen this on their monitor and know if it's a monitor problem or a graphics card problem? Finding another monitor is relatively easy. New graphics card for an acquisition computer, a bit more complicated

I'm not sure this is what Fortnum & Mason had in mind when they made their tea, but no one can stop me 😝

I have read the Agilent "Shared Resource Facility Market Analysis" white paper a few times. I recently noticed that 100.8% of cores have websites 😆

As you can imagine, things have slowed down a bit at Harvard with the cancellation of grants. With that time, I decided to analyze who the users are at the HCBI for the first half of the year. Unsurprisingly, 85% is internal users. The remaining 15% is industry and external academic.

My dog is feeling very sorry for herself (rightly so), but she is home and resting on one of her many beds.

Playing the game, do any of these work as water substitutes?

Googled "Vista Green DNA dye" because a user wants to use it for an experiment. First hit I got was for "PubCompare." Not sure what the point of the website is if it needs the disclaimer "automatically generated- may contain errors"

last year this was a storage room and microscope graveyard. Now it's jam-packed with microscopes🔬😃

Spent the last 5 days camping and I'm going to appreciate my bed tonight

Looks like it will be a stellar weekend camping...

Also, I'm waaaay too excited for the Hamamatsu Quest 2 camera with insanely low readout noise and dark current 😍

The SoRa has finished being installed and we are getting trained today! Something to enjoy for a few hours while the "real world" burns
