Dispatches from the California Republic. Ask me about Apocalypse Book Club.
I kind of forgot about this place. I’ll try harder!

When I worked at Subway in high school, customers couldn’t see over the high counter. You told me everything you wanted when you ordered. You got what you got at the end.

There was no room for creativity for the budding young Sandwich Artist. We had to follow the diagrams.
Subway is infuriating because like how are you gonna have me tell you step by step how to make my sandwich and still somehow do it wrong

the details here are quite technical. there's finding money and there's finding money. but agreeing to spend USG money that is not appropriated is actually a statutory crime on the part of the individual who makes the obligation. So not Trump, but the appointee/employee who does it.
No one wants a paper trail because spending funds Congress has not appropriated is colloquially known as “stealing from the US Treasury.”

I’m looking forward to our discussion of @premeemohamed.com’s book tomorrow. The author will be joining us. If you don’t want to sleep too much tonight, you have time to read/listen to the whole thing.
The February selection for Apocalypse Book Club is WE SPEAK THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN by @premeemohamed.com. It is the sequel to THE ANNUAL MIGRATION OF CLOUDS, a novella we read in 2023. Our next meeting is on February 23 via Zoom. Let me know if you are interested in joining Apocalypse Book Club.

@rdotspoon.bsky.social I finally watched the new season of Sweet Magnolias. What a lovely Easter egg MEEGAN was! The description of “a little spicy” was understated. 🔥

Me: idk, I feel like the Samuel L. Jackson bits were maybe too heavyhanded, we don’t need the subtext spelled out for us, the audience is smarter than that

Me after reading several insane takes about the halftime show: I think maybe the Samuel L. Jackson bits were not heavyhanded enough

I just finished this. You still have time to read or listen to both of these novellas by February 23 if you’d like to join #ApocalypseBookClub

A Black spy saved George Washington’s life, helped win the Revolutionary War, and still had to buy his freedom.

If America really loved Black history, James Armistead Lafayette would have his own blockbuster spy movie by now. Instead, we get another reboot of Batman.

I learned some #richpeople stuff last week. When traveling, they buy extra insurance to evacuate them to a country with better hospitals in case of emergency. When traveling for medical procedures in other countries, they bring their own blood in case they need transfusions. #themoreyouknow

If you're protesting tomorrow:

"I invoke my rights to silence and counsel and will not answer questions without my attorney present."

MEMORIZE THAT, because aside from asking if you're free to leave (or providing ID if you're in a stop and ID state), that's the ONLY thing you ever say to cops.

5 ways to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth (cause the fed govt doesn’t run your house)

1. Find out what Sojourner Truth REALLY said
2. Buy a Black horror, scifi or fantasy book
3. Listen to “Naima” by John Coltrane
4. Send the victims of the LA fires in Altadena a few coins
5. Get a library card

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

Watching the first season of The Handmaid’s Tale, at each new atrocity I asked, “Why didn’t they leave then?” This is one of those moments for me. Right now my answer is that kids have expired passports.

“Knowledge is overrated. My strongest opinions are on things I know almost nothing about.” Said by a character on season 2 of XOXO, KITTY. You’d think it could’ve been said by anyone in the ⚪️🏠, but that would show an unprecedented level of self-awareness.
