Chipping sparrows have been jumping all around my backyard lately. This round little guy made the perfect subject for practicing light and detail as I incorporate a bit of oil painting into my routine.

Last night I squeezed in a quick paint on Teacup in Sedona — a fast-and-loose study of Thunder Mountain before sunset. Kept things pretty abstract since I only had about 45 minutes before I had to hustle home to beat the dark.

Beautiful and dramatic day out on Vultee. I had to hide my painting from raindrops for a few minutes but otherwise I really enjoyed the dramatic skies and lighting.

I enjoyed #pleinairpril day 08 with my local plein air Tuesday group at the Sedona Wetlands Preserve. Never really painted water scenes before so this was a delightful challenge. Always great to see everyone else’s work too

I’ve been experimenting this week with some smaller contraptions for plein air painting. Built using recycled clipboard and some tools I rented from the local library (having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a scroll saw!)

This trail Ground Control is one of the hardest mountain bike routes I’ve tried in Sedona. Especially with my plein air backpack throwing off my balance I ended up walking a lot of it this time, but the view was worth the effort!
