I think a little imperfection, dirt, and grain would have done the atmosphere a lot of good. But overall... I like it!

And even though I think the camera work is good, I don't like the look throughout. At times, the film seems so sharp, the image so clear, so digitally clean, that Badlands takes on an almost synthetic feel.

I'm also not entirely happy with Dek's design. He's supposed to be smaller and weaker, which is explained in the story and makes total sense. But he looks a little too “pleasing” and clean to me. And Bud... well, he seems like a concession to Disney.

What bothers me is the inconsistency in the timeline that Badlands creates. Because at the time it takes place, Wayland Yutani doesn't actually exist anymore. At least if you consider Alien Resurrection, which Dan Trachtenberg references.

Badlands works pretty well. The characters are great, the story is well told, and Elle Fanning in particular does a fantastic job. There is a little more insight into the culture of the Yautja. I like the reference to “carrying your buddy on your back” from Resurrection.

... and makes unexpected friends along the way. Think of The Hobbit, Perseus, Buck Rogers, Star Wars, or John Carter. That's not what the Predator films have been like so far. But that's a good thing, I think. Although I wouldn't mind another very classic Predator film.
