Every time I rub my 1yo’s upset tummy, I remember this guy I was soooo into freshman year of college. He dumped me because his high school gf apparently rubbed his tummy every night so he could fall asleep, and he didn’t think he could live without that 🫠🫠🫠

One of the big asymmetries in US politics is how Republicans getting more votes from men is a major crisis for the Democratic party that must be addressed, perhaps by abandoning some values, while Democrats getting more votes from women is a nonissue for the Republican Party, not worth discussing.

The thing about unchecked power is it often makes grave mistakes. One of the reason Putin decided on the folly of war with Ukraine was the lack of those willing to tell him he was making a grave error. I fear @realDonaldTrump will stumble into a war, costing troop’s their lives.

Here I am reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 address at Cooper Union, where he defends his opposition to the expansion of slavery. Responding to Southern critics who insisted that the Republican Party was a conspiracy to abolish slavery, Lincoln said that the truth of the situation was that there was nothing either Republicans or the entire North could say, short of outright submission to the slave South, that would calm Southern anger or assuage the South’s paranoia: What will convince them? This, and this only: Cease to call slavery wrong, and join them in calling it right. And this must be done thoroughly — done in acts as well as in words. Silence will not be tolerated — we must place ourselves avowedly with them. We can say something similar of our time. Neither Trump nor the MAGA right wants to discuss or deliberate; it wants to dominate. American politics is no longer a fight over policy; it is a fight over the character of the nation itself. The task of this moment, then, is to defend the old vision of a more perfect union — of a more democratic and egalitarian American republic — not hope that one can avoid the fight by having the right conversation.

Congress willingly abdicated their power in order to consolidate it in the executive branch.

They wanted a dictatorship, even if it meant giving up their own power to assist it.

DOJ & Supreme Court have done the same. This coup takes complicity from the checks & balances.

They're in it together.
One of the most remarkable things of the last 9 months is how many Americans seem to believe the President is all powerful and Congress has no say. Actually Congress has been ineffective by choice. It has immense power if it had the courage to use it.
