Run-roh! Dr. Karina Bistrong’s last day in the lab. It was celebrated Scooby-Doo style 🐾🔍 She’s off to NYU for a postdoc with the exciting new lab run by @alicemosberger@bluesky.social — onward to solving the mysteries of motor systems!

Lack of spontaneous activity (#retinalwaves) in early development prevents the formation of retinal circuits critical for stabilizing images as we move through the world. doi.org/10.1016/j.ce....

We validate these findings by focusing on one of these genes, a potassium channel and explore functional impact due to its loss on β2KO RGCs. 9/12
December 10, 2024 at 11:06 AM
When examined at the level of individual RGC types, our findings reveal several interesting genes, including those that encode potassium channels and subunits of neurotransmitter receptors, whose expression is altered in β2KO mice. 8/12
December 10, 2024 at 11:05 AM
In fact, to our surprise, when investigating all RGCs collectivity (i.e. without accounting for individual types), the transcriptomic impact of wave disruption is relatively modest as compared to developmental changes. 7/12
December 10, 2024 at 11:05 AM
Our data shows that in β2KO mice, the specification of RGC types remains unaffected, indicating that differentiation of RGCs occurs independently of spontaneous activity. 6/12
December 10, 2024 at 11:04 AM
We investigate these questions in this study by performing single-cell RNA sequencing on RGCs isolated from wild-type and β2KO mice, which lack the β2 subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, leading to the disruption of cholinergic retinal waves. 5/12
December 10, 2024 at 11:03 AM
The developmental neuroscience community has long recognized the significance of retinal waves—spontaneous, wave-like activity that sweeps across the developing retina—in influencing the refinement of visual maps in the brain. 2/12

Where does the retina go in the brain and how does it get there? Check out new review I wrote with the brilliant Daniel Kerschensteiner. bit.ly/3GxadP2
