Seeing the sub and dub showings of Color's Within tonight 😊 here are some throwback pics I took when I saw Naoko Yamada in LA last October

Naoko Yamada, filmmaker of The Colors Within and A Silent Voice, talks to us about her quietly powerful career:

Almost forgot at the end of the panel Yamada drew a little storyboard and was like, I don't have to draw good because I'm a director 😆. She also called the audience yasashii (nice) for clapping for each of her character drawings.

For Rui, Yamada talked about how she wanted him to have glasses despite Kojima not wanting that haha. She mentioned that drawing glasses is hard and drew a cute round version of Rui next to her detailed drawing. She also mentioned she wanted him to wear glasses to show how studious he is.

For Kimi, she described her as both her favorite to draw but also the hardest. Yamada was also asked about Daisuke Richard and she mentioned being a fan of his and his fashion sense. She drew Kimi with a big smirk and erased it to point out that she looks cooler with a smaller mouth.

Yamada also drew a dolphin next to Totsuko and described Totsuko as the belly of a Dolphin 😄

When she was drawing Totsuko she commented that she was chubby and cutesy and pointed out both her cross shaped highlight in her hair and also the ahoge on the top of her head. She asked the audience if they knew what ahoge was and called it an important otaku word lol.

Naoko Yamada mentioned being pretty nervous for this drawing panel and that since the character designer Kojima is so good she doesn't draw 😅

So for the drawing portion Naoko Yamada first drew these really cutesy simple circle faces of Totsuko, Kimi, and Rui and described that as her usual drawing style haha. Then she started going into a more detailed drawing of each of the characters.

I saw Yamada's QnA and drawing panel today, peak, perfection. We couldn't take pictures or video of her drawing but I took some notes during then and pictures and video during the QnA 🥰
