At Greenlane Archaeology Ltd we also have a bookshop- mainly archaeology and history but also lots of local volumes, nature, gardens etc. Have a look at the catalogue on the website: www.greenlanearchaeology.co.uk/bookshop/

Should spend more time on here. Work is just keeping me mega busy! Don't know what's going on but definitely not complaining! Got lots of new books in and sample processing to do!

Hello Bluesky!

#Adventkalender Door 6: this is another find from our Millom Community Dig in the summer: a cap(?) badge with a boar's head left above a banner with the motto VIX EA NOSTRA VOCO (lat. "I scarcely call these things our own"). If anyone can shed any light on this, or give us a date we'd appreciate it!

#Adventkalender Door 5: Greenlane Archaeology supported Millom & District History Society last summer, excavating summer trenches near Millom Castle and Holy Trinity Church. We found some medieval 12h-14thC objects like this stirrup shaped strap fitting which came out in almost mint condition!!

Found another fragment of the same plate- the complete pattern is that sort of thing: a pagoda on an island with shrubbery. I really like it!

#Adventkalender Door 4: in the last couple of years I was also introduced to underglaze blue painted earthenwares/tin glazed earthenwares, dating from late 18th-early 19th C. I love the painted Chinese pagoda patterns, definitely prefer them to transfer prints! This lovely sherd is from Lancaster.

#Adventkalender Door 3: Delftware. Over the last 2 1/2 I developed a soft spot for post medieval pottery, especially locally Delftware. There was a big Pothouse at the Quay in Lancaster (1754-c1786) and we found some of their products at a site near Watery Lane, Lancaster.

#Adventkalender Door 2 I always enjoyed working on local Late Bronze Age hoards like this one from Scotforth near Lancaster, Lancashire. Found by a metal detectorist and reported via @findsorguk.bsky.social it is now in Lancaster City Museum! The two harness rings have parallels in Scotland.

#Adventkalender Door 1 - not strictly speaking current work but probably what most people know me for best for - Early Iron Age socketed axes, this one from Llyn Fawr, Glamorgan, Wales! I was lucky enough to work on the axes from this famous hoard for my PhD:-)

More finds washing and dry brushing this morning- have developed soft spot for stoneware, not sure why! Maybe because it's quite tactile and the glasses are so pretty? Or maybe it's just me 😂😂🤔 🤔

Found this in the shop today- the middle bit is a (extremely piercing!!) whistle but I had to Google what the whole thing is- would have known? Hint: there's a small number 12 between the prongs on the right; on the left side is a hinge.

I just found out that my company, Greenlane Archaeology, did a Heritage Statement for 60 Berry St in Liverpool that had a Banksy rat on the facade!!! Wow! It's been taken off and sold sadly but what a cool building to work on! Have archived the project archive with Liverpool Archives today 😊
