Another way to heat water for the brewing is to use stones, heat them in a fire and then drop them in the water. This method is for wooden tubs and buckets. A cauldron would be a prestige, high status bit of kit. Have a look at traditional farmhouse brewing techniques - there is loads out there!

Not so sure about that. Brewers treasure their kit and keep it scrupulously clean!

Yay! Thanks! I watched an archaeology programme on the TV the other day. Iron Age site. They were seriously discussing making soups and stews and stuff like inviting the neighbours round for Sunday lunch. I mean, really? The evidence was quite clearly indicative of brewing some ale for the feast. 🍺
