Restoration work to this Victorian 1880 porch. Sod of a job and very hard to stay within and keep the aesthetic. A way to go yet with some detailing to add to bring it in line. But the rot is all gone and bottom boards and lattice repairs next week.

(on a personal note it's quite striking how quickly I've gone from "generally a bit of a pinko on defence issues" to "and could I just do a monthly direct debit to BAE Systems, would that help")

I think this is the closest many of us have ever got to seeing the real Trump. The only consistent thread in his entire unhinged rant was the love & praise for Vladimir Putin. Zelensky has more courage & dignity in his little finger than every member of Trump's regime & fan club combined.

I will never forget the photo of Zelenskyy’s face after he saw Russia’s war crimes in Bucha in 2022. He seemed to age years in an afternoon. Watching him constantly cross the world asking for aid that should have been thrown at him is one of the deepest shames of our age.

The bourgeoise Capel Tegid in Bala built in 1866 for £4k. This Calvinist Methodist Capel with its copper spire that caused outrage, was a divergence from previous religious asceticism. Membership here was a status symbol and cemented Bala’s reputation as a Welsh spiritual centre.

Can I just check in with the law and order folk... grooming trafficking and rape is now OK if carried out by white brothers supported by tech bros, but the decline of western civilisation is carried out by liberals and pronouns.

No trip to Bala is complete without a trip to TJ Roberts the butchers. Sad to see that the 1 1/4 pound pork pies have been hit by inflationary pressure and now cost 25p more at £2.50 each. 🥧 🏴

In April after Russia invaded i helped run a series of coffee mornings for Ukrainian refugees. A girl from Odessa, clearly deeply traumatised and withdrawn took part in an art session and painted this picture.
She returned later that year when the front stabilised.
Sending all the thoughts. 🇺🇦

Lime Finishers, an early warning that next Tuesday we have Professor Liz Laycock from Sheffield Hallam University talking about the degradation of building materials, with a focus on stone. Liz will explore how finishes are likely to be a climate responsible approach to decay - Stone decay 101.

My mate, Jamie Mac is on holiday in Malta and sent me these; ashlar as in the sense the term is used in the Builders Dictionary of 1734, covered with a very fine coat of plaster and limewash. We find traces in sheltered areas around doors and windows in Scotland.

It's not just that we've lost the sense of a shared reality; the notion of truth as a principle/philosophy. But that, in the tech-media-populist age, truth has come to mean/symbolise a highly personalised, emotionally-driven, identity former that can be different for everyone. So it's up for grabs.
