SES students got to measure bacterial production in their Winogradsky Columns using radioactive 14C-Leucine yesterday! My favorite lab! ☢️🦠❤️

Great to see my former SES undergraduate student, Hoang Luu, present her @mblscience.bsky.social research (with help from the @julesdeep.bsky.social lab) at ASBMB...on her own!

Seems like you could extract a fair amount of DNA from the air today!

Good turnout for the Stand Up for Science March in Woods Hole, MA. While a small town on Cape Code, Woods Hole hosts 6 premier science institutions that include @mblscience.bsky.social, @whoi.edu, @noaa.gov fisheries, @woodwellclimate.bsky.social, USGS, and @sea1971.bsky.social

You've got to break a few ridiculously expensive and fragile potato chip filters to count viruses @mblscience.bsky.social! SES Undergrad Hoang Luu getting good at it (the counting, not the breaking). Thanks to the Huber Lab ( @julesdeep.bsky.social et al.) for showing the way! And Zeiss microscopy 2

Nice day for a short field trip to sample Siders Pond in Falmouth, MA. Undergraduate Hoang Luu measuring bacterial productivity using radioisotopes under anaerobic conditions with help from SES TA Mary Ossar. It's in the bag! @mblscience.bsky.social

An old (~2010) Winogradsky column sitting in my office window has started to develop a great black spot 🤔

Profiles of hydrogen sulfide and methane (SW: saltwater; FW: freshwater). Columns had some N and P added, then either Wool, Sawdust, Chitin added for a C source. Controls received no inputs. Sediments collected at Little Sippewisset estuary, MA

Another cold but beautiful day on Siders Pond with @mblscience.bsky.social SES student Alexandria and TA Quincy, this time with the deep water anaerobic inoculator and student rowing (and singing but I'll save you that ;)
