Studying Japanese is cool now. Maybe even slightly passé. It’s taken for granted.
In the 80s in America, tensions were high. I was accused by some of wanting to work for the enemy!

In 1989 in the only bookstore in my hometown, this was the only thing available on Japanese. It was a tiny book.
I made the best of it.
In our local library was 1 other book on Japanese - just kanji.
That’s how I started.
No schools taught it.
No opportunity to hear or read it.
LOL

That’s how I started.
