As evidence of this, voters are just no longer willing to vote for split tickets at the national level. This is a structural change in U.S. politics, not a question of which candidates the parties nominate. You cannot change the voters' preference for straight tickets simply by running moderates.

I don't think this is as strange as you think. A quick search suggests that other circuit courts also allow a sua sponte rehearing en banc. The fifth circuit's internal rules expressly allow for such:

Here is the quote in context. It's quite clear what she was saying: the GOP needed to reject Trumpism and all he stood for and return to a more reasonable party. It obviously had nothing to do with empowering nazis.

I just came across this chart, and I have to say that I find the data troubling not surprising. These personality changes are consistent with what I have observed in students over the past 15 years of teaching. That is also why I was not dismissive of Haidt's arguments in "The Anxious Generation."
