Midnight. That was all the note said, and it was all it needed to say. Whenever both of their families were staying in town and the girls wanted to meet after dark, they would make their way to the swings behind Bridgerton House. Many nights they would trade gossip about their families, or the staff, or share something they read that was perhaps not quite fit for proper company. It was also where they met up, night after night, the year Edmund died. A towering figure, his untimely passing left an enormous hole to fill in the family, and all in different ways. That summer, Penelope spent a lot of time talking Eloise out of doing increasingly outrageous things. She was forever grateful that Eloise only picked up a smoking habit instead of actually venturing deeper into the City, tailing her older brothers on their own quests to plaster over the wound left by a beloved father. In retrospect, these meetings were almost always initiated by Eloise. For Penelope to prompt a meeting, it must be serious indeed. "El, thank you for coming." Her voice drifted across the starlit grasses as Eloise rounded the corner. For Penelope to have initiated the meeting and gotten here first, with a more complex path to take from across the Square? Perhaps the world was ending. Eloise drew closer to her friend, sitting down next to her in the free swing and taking her hand briefly in greeting. She blinked as her fingers tightened.
