One of the best pieces I’ve read in ages about where we are now. Does that brilliant and impossibly difficult thing of articulating core truths that you know and have even shouted across tables at people but reframing them so you see them with a different clarity & can redefine your own argument.

Hi! Are you a US researcher who spent time thinking about humans? Then your work is in danger of censorship and loss. I'm here to walk you through basic self-archiving.

Maybe you think I am being hyperbolic. You only worked on bacteria! Not your problem. Do me a favor and join me anyway.

An excellent deep dive intp the dats behind FIRE's "campus free speech" rankings. You won't be surprised to learn they are bullshit, riddled with errors and willful misrepresentions. This is not a serious organization and we would stop treating it as such. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

OK, I wrote my “who’s going to enforce it?” piece. It’s a lengthy read, trying to respond to a lot of questions I’ve gotten over the past three weeks, but it’s about democracy so I decided it was worth it to lay out in depth, with examples, what I’ve been talking about here and elsewhere.
Don't let Donald Trump and Elon Musk talk us out of democracy
Trump and Musk are testing the limits, trying to sell America on being an authoritarian state — but they can’t do it unless we allow them to do so.

Bondi's Justice Department looks poised to prosecute blue state doctors who mail abortion pills into red states, probably under the Comstock Act.

She's also very likely to restrict access to medication abortion WITHIN blue states by declaring that *all* mailing of abortion pills is unlawful.

For "One First," I wrote about Monday's OMB memo purporting to (temporarily) freeze billions of dollars of appropriated federal spending—and why it constitutes both unconstitutional and unlawful "impoundment" that's unlikely to be upheld by even *this* #SCOTUS:

120. The Impoundment Crisis of 2025
The Trump administration's Monday spending freeze is likely to provoke a crisis over the constitutionality of "impoundment"—one that the justices could well have to resolve *very* soon.

Holy moly. I'm trying to write an academic paper, and nearly every application I'm using is not only offering Generative AI as an option for writing, but *pushing it* -- pervading the design to the point where a simple misclick would make my content AI-generated. Here's why that's a problem. 🧵

Every year on Thanksgiving at 12pm, I, like many others, turn on the radio to listen to "Alice's Restaurant." Growing up, I'd sit w/my parents and listen; now, I sit w/my kids

"College classrooms are places for collective inquiry, not partisan competition." Great critique of "viewpoint diversity" from my Denison colleague John McHugh for @insidehighered.com.
"Viewpoint diversity" is not the answer (opinion)
Viewpoint diversity treats the symptoms of dogmatism, but curiosity treats the disease, John McHugh writes.
