Today is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day
💚🩷💙

MBC is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

Some people, like me, are diagnosed at stage 4, this is called de novo, others have the cancer come back after it has been treated this is called a recurrence.

Just a few days away from the Run for the Cure and my team the @westislanddragons are fundraising for metastatic breast cancer research. Link in my bio and my story 🩷

A milestone to celebrate! Five years ago Dr.A called me to tell me that I was stopping what was originally planned to be lifelong treatments. It was a shock and it took time to adjust to not going to the hospital every month.

Another milestone to celebrate today! On this day in 2016 I got my post treatment PET scan results that told me that all the cancer cells in my body were dead, I was NEAD (no evidence of active disease) I had a PCR (pathologic complete response) to my treatment, which is ideal.

I wear compression garments all day and all night, the only time I am not wearing one is when I am in the shower or in the pool. It impacts my life in a number of ways, including making being in the heat painful, because my arm swells.
March 6, 2025 at 3:51 PM
In fact, the swelling in my arm was the very first sign that I had breast cancer. The cancer had spread to my lymph nodes in my armpit, and one of them had been completely consumed by the disease.

Today is World Lymphedema Day.

I was officially diagnosed with lymphedema in 2017, but I had been dealing with its symptoms since 2015.
March 6, 2025 at 3:51 PM
The primary symptom is noticeable redness and swelling of the breast skin, sometimes accompanied by a dimpled appearance. Like an orange peel, with skin thickening. No lump, still cancer 🩷🧡🖤

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare disease accounting for 1-5% of all breast cancer diagnoses.

IBC is known for its aggressive behavior, spreading quickly and often presenting with symptoms similar to a breast infection.

Today is @worldcancerday
Cancer turns your world upside down and every experience is unique.

This photo was taken by @yorgisphoto in 2016 not long after my diagnosis.

Being diagnosed with de novo stage 4 HER2+ HR- inflammatory breast cancer in 2016 at 45 definitely turned my life upside down.

Happy to report that I have been accepted into the AACR Scientist <-> Survivor Program for 2025!

I will be heading to Chicago in April where I will get to attend the conference and present a poster during it.

It’s been 9 years since I had my first round of chemotherapy and immunotherapy at the Cedars Cancer Centre at the MUHC. In a few months I will be celebrating 5 years since I was able to stop treatment which is still surreal for me.

On January 20, 2016 I walked into the Cedars Cancer centre at the MUHC for the first time. I met my oncologist, Dr.A discussed my diagnosis, my treatment plan and my PET scan results.
