One of my students called Freytag’s triangle/the plot checkmark “the allen wrench” and I have never been so delighted.

Glad to get recognition on this deeply weird, deeply intimate, and artistically important-to-me story, which is in the collection I’m working to place. Thanks to American Short Fiction (and congratulations to the winners).

One of the smaller, accessible PDX rallies had 5k people and this amazing sign. #nokings

More scenes from the Portland war zone.

(Neighborhood house, not mine).

My poem “September 11 and September 11,” published in The Pointed Circle. Feeling this today.

I bought Fig this sparkly rainbow tank as a souvenir when I was in Provincetown last week. She now refuses to take it off (which she has never done with an item of clothing). Maybe this is something you needed to see today? For no reason whatsoever?

Until I get into the @cmwritershouse.bsky.social account, I’ll use my own to thank Justin Rigamonti, who is stepping down as Coordinator. Under his invaluable five-year stewardship, the CMWH Residency and programming launched, and dozens of writers were welcomed into Carolyn’s gift of respite.

I loved so many of the poems from Sid Ghosh’s new @milkweededitions.bsky.social book yellow flower gills me whole, but I want to share this one. Part of the Multiverse Series highlighting the practices and creativity of neurodivergent, autistic, neuroqueer, mad, nonspeaking, and disabled cultures.”

Hey PDX book and poetry people, this event on Sunday at @powells.bsky.social is going to be something else. Please come witness a conversation between poets Chris Martin and Sid Gosh, a nonspeaking autistic writer with Down syndrome whose poems display “a dexterity replete with vertiginous grace.”

So not only is Grammarly encouraging my students to use my writing to train AI, but they will be using my RateMyProfessor reviews to give students draft feedback? Great. Sounds great.

(Almost makes me miss the days of the chili pepper.)

Rereading Heather Christle’s THE TREES THE TREES as part of the Sealey Challenge and this poem always hits me where I live. #sealeychallenge

I came home to find this box on my porch and ALERT: it is officially the season when gardeners foist off their giant zucchini over abundance on unsuspecting neighbors.

I went to the dying/rebirthing Lloyd Center mall for my mother’s birthday where, at Floating World comics, we bought a beautifully graphic version of ON TYRANNY (illustrated by Nora Krug) and I’m going to recommend it in the spirit of “do you buy books you see on Bluesky”? 📚💙

Yesterday as we lost Andrea Gibson and the Department of Education, and I lay feverish in bed. Today I got up and took my morning walk to the little free (treat) library my dog Fig loves. Thought you might also want to see some things to stay here for.

Fig is making sure I’m working but not too hard at the Sou’Wester artist retreat. So much novel mapping.

But this one is kind of cute, no?

Rebecca Solnit (with Lidia Yuknavitch) reminding us about the critical role of slowness and uncertainty in making monumental changes to human systems. And reminding us that humans are part of vast nonhuman systems.

The bush in question.
May 11, 2025 at 12:00 AM
The world’s ugliest rose bush lives in my yard. Apparently the previous owners tried to get rid of it, but the plant was tenacious and became one giant thorny stalk that each year grows a single rose. This year, that rose sure was something.
