if you go and try this, the second youre done playing blue sphere here you HAVE to hold the left d pad button down. if you let sonic idle THEN go back, the palettes load back in fine and you miss your chance

this works on sonic & knuckles stand alone AND sonic 3 & knuckles. it ALSO works on sonic 3 AIR but the mushrooms turn a different color. like a weird blue magenta color

but if you go BACKWARDS the game gets a liiiiitle bit confused, so you get the soft cream colors of the green palette with fucked up pink mushroom tops
