An advance copy of Cath Hanley’s new book arrived today. It’s about one of my favourite French kings, and as I say on the back cover, it’s lively and learned and a must read if you love medieval history. #medievalsky #booksky

I keynoted a conference in Finland and the organisers gave me Moomin mittens as a thank you. Sometimes academia is a-okay.

I am very sorry to say that my PhD advisor Thomas N. Bisson has died. He was a great scholar, a kind man, and a central figure in my life. I will miss him.

There’s an article in @thetimes.com today on @jtpmedieval.bsky.social ’s early #medieval medicine project. (Himself pictured therein making actual medieval potions behind our house)

Circumference of the earth according to the Travels of Sir John Mandeville, written ca. 1370: 20,425 miles, only about 4,500 miles off. Not bad for a monk calculating with Roman numerals and an astrolabe.

I am looking forward to this conference on conflict within medieval and early modern uprisings in Salamanca next month, even if I am listed as being at Edinburgh rather than St Andrews. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🙃
Contact info for the organisers if you'd like to attend via Zoom is in the alt text

Very pleased to have early hands on @profgabriele.com and @lollardfish.bsky.social. What’s not to love about some good Carolingian on Carolingian violence?

My review of Helen Castor's The Eagle and the Hart and Dan Jones's Henry V is out now in @thetls.bsky.social.
As I write, 'both books are deeply researched, masterfully told and utterly riveting'.
You should go out and get yours today. #newbooks #medievalhistory #medievalsky

I am off today with a cold brought on by Too Much Fun in deepest France last week, but I was pleased to get proofs of my Foreword to Lordship and the Decentralised State in Late Medieval Europe, a collection of academic essays coming out with the British Academy later this year.

Au revoir to Pau and to the tower built by Gaston Phoebus, count of Foix, lord of the Pyrenees, and one of the most colourful characters of the colourful fourteenth century. Je reviens.

I got to see one of my favourite historical objects today:
This is the tortoise shell cradle of King Henri IV of France (the one who supposedly said ‘Paris is well worth a mass’) in the château de Pau near the French Pyrenees. People used to break bits off as relics. I was tempted.

Excited to get stuck into this proof copy of Nora Berend’s forthcoming book on el Cid later this weekend. I used to teach the text and it was always popular.

Philip VI of France is judged harshly for seeing traitors everywhere and having them executed in grisly ways.
But people really did want to overthrow Philip, not least among them Edward III.
In the immortal words of Kurt Cobain, 'Just because you're paranoid doesn't meant they're not after you.'

Turned on the tv, rented a video from Amazon, and redirected the sound from headphones to the soundbar without the help of my husband or kids. Now sitting down w/ wine to watch On Golden Pond. Middle-aged lady achievement unlocked.

Delighted to come back from holiday to find this book of Hundred Years War sources, edited, translated and explained by various good #historians, including me. Looking forward to teaching with it. #medievalsky
