I'm kinda guessing that's her dad or something. He's got that old grey vibe.

Oh yeah! This was a product of the 90's! The mark of success wasn't how well written, or actively engaging anything was. It was how tangible the merchandise was! The 70's was dipping its toes into cereal mascots, the 80's took it too far with action figures, and the 90's managed to find that hook.

Anyway, that's my annual rant on this weird cult of 'crying out for media literacy- but only read one book in their lives, and supplement all further engagement with culture through animation for children and no further supplementation or sourcing'

I genuinely believe the reason there is essentially this cult-like nostalgia for an otherwise unremarkable fantasy world with the thinnest, most emaciated veneer of a 'mystery' is entirely due to us UK kids being absolutely SATURATED with it. It was inescapable.

It was so aggressively advertised.

(It was literally mandatory reading in school in the UK. They had us 'read along' to stephen fry's narration.)

I still read them because -everyone- did and peer pressure is a hell of a drug. I did get sucked in, BUT I think being armed with mountains of additional reading helped me to not center my entire childhood around it like some of the millenials I know do.

My dad liked to read any books my brother and I showed interest in to make sure it was up to his standards. Not on a moral purity level but "Is this stupid, is it going to rot their brains?" and he deemed Potter to be wildly incompetent.

His snobbery saved me from potentially becoming one of THEM.
