Decades of systematic and targeted attacks on Gaza’s health and rehabilitative structures - coupled with almost two decades of blockade and now, mass bombardment and a total siege - have ensured that the newly injured, the chronically ill and the disabled are denied adequate healthcare and rehabilitation resources, such that they remain in a state of injury rather than transitioning into a state of what Jasbir Puar calls “functioning disability”.

Police increasingly use facial recognition software to identify unknown culprits from still images, usually taken by surveillance cameras at or near the scene of a crime. New Orleans police took this technology a step further, utilizing a private network of more than 200 facial recognition cameras to watch over the streets, constantly monitoring for wanted suspects and automatically pinging officers’ mobile phones through an app to convey the names and current locations of possible matches. This appears out of step with a 2022 city council ordinance, which limited police to using facial recognition only for searches of specific suspects in their investigations of violent crimes and never as a more generalized “surveillance tool” for tracking people in public places. Each time police want to scan a face, the ordinance requires them to send a still image to trained examiners at a state facility and later provide details about these scans in reports to the city council — guardrails meant to protect the public’s privacy and prevent software errors from leading to wrongful arrests.

It also confirmed without a shadow of a doubt that I had done the right thing, and gave me a sense of hope during what is so far possibly the worst American year of my lifetime. When I went on the local news, I expected that I would start to hear from trolls. (I got one, very lackluster.) But more support rolled in. I learned all kinds of things about the history of Sweet Briar. The irony is that these students fucking love this school. They are furious not only at the disrespect the policy shows to them and their classmates, but at the way it tarnishes the home and reputation of the Vixens.

Nearly 26,000 guns were traced from American crime scenes back to a government agency, law enforcement or the military between 2017 and 2021, the most recently available data, according to a report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  However, when government auditors investigated firearms that law enforcement agencies reported missing over a 15-year period, the General Services Administration Inspector General found that more than two-thirds had not gone missing at all but, rather, were inappropriately sold or traded —including Uzis and grenade launchers that were never recovered.

Yes, this is exactly what my epilepsy feels like.
Now among the cherished writers of my youth I could tell which ones had been taken. Woolf and Forster floating in their nightgowns. Dostoevsky holding a potato, shaking uncontrollably on my dirt floors. The building, rising rollercoaster feeling that came as a premonition; this had its relation to writing itself. Is The X-Files kind of about epilepsy? I would wonder. It kind of seems to be a metaphor for epilepsy: missing time, weird hallways gone green, bright lights and shame on waking.
