Touches on smthg important—if we understand money is the legal tool for mobilizing our resources, DHS's $ is mobilizing American society to care for all its employees

Eg an ICE agent's Chipotle order is a command to occupied servants to cook a meal for the occupier's family

True of all federal $!
U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Monday criticized the media and politicians, including Gov. JB Pritzker, for “trying to demonize” federal immigration agents and she urged citizens to thank law enforcement officers and “cook a meal for their families.”

What makes LLMs work as a business is precisely that all this text is decommodified, free. As they themselves say, they'd have to shut down if they had to pay for their trainging data. Yet all that data is the product of human labor. This cutting edge of capitalism rests on a substrate of communism.

When we look at the useful stuff that LLMs give us, we should not think, how cool is this technology. We should think, what an amazing range of useful work people are willing to share online, freely, without any monetary compensation. Which the machine is just summarizing for us.

Trump’s deployment of troops to Portland is a dangerous escalation of authoritarianism. Now is the time to find our own ways of standing up and fighting back to preserve our democracy. Fellow vets: we need you to muster. And those serving: you can refuse an unlawful order as you may receive it.

This is structurally similar to the critique of Zionism as “a machine for the conversion of grief into power.” This is why you see ethnonationalist regimes instantly exploit martyrs to erode norms and increase their power. Victims “on their side” aren’t tragedies—they are fuel.

How to grieve, what meaning to give those tears, is cruelly a political question whether we like it or not.

The lack of mainstream coverage of regular huge protests reminds me of a talk from a Twitter employees who explained that they had to drop BLM off the Trending Tags section because otherwise it would have been there permanently. The modern media environment has no appetite for sustained movements.

the issue is the President currently has an unchallenged ability to assassinate at will for political gain, the token libertarian feigning concern here is so weak
Rand Paul on Trump striking a Venezuelan boat and killing 11 people: "You might ask the question, where does it end? Are we the world's policemen? Are we gonna be blowing people up off the coast all around the world? ... is it really the constitutional duty of our government?"
