So grants to Hispanic Serving Institutions are unconstitutional? Yet just today I recd that NEA email saying creative writing fellowships are cancelled in favor of projects that “elevate the Nation’s HBCUs and Hispanic Serving Institutions…” among other projects etc etc. Was that email a lie? Gasp.

It’s official. NEA creative writing fellowship applications will not be reviewed and the fellowships are cancelled. Here’s the text of the email sent out to applicants:
This is in reference to your recent application to the National Endowment for the Arts' FY 2026 Creative Writing Fellowships. The NEA has cancelled the FY 2026 Creative Writing Fellowships program. The Creative Writing category has been Withdrawn by the Agency and will not be reviewed. We recognize that receiving this news can be disappointing, especially after all the hard work and dedication you put into your application. The NEA is updating its grantmaking policy priorities to focus funding on projects that reflect the nation's rich artistic heritage and creativity as prioritized by the Administration Consequently, we are cancelling existing funding opportunities that fall outside these new priorities. The two parted ways. Before entering a nearby subway station, Honan opened the bag and discovered a red envelope inside stuffed with cash, at least one $100 bill and several $20 bills. The reporter then called Greco and told her she could not accept the money and asked if she was still nearby so she could give it back. Greco said she'd left the area. Honan told her she had to take the money back, and Greco said they could meet at some point in Chinatown.
