Just digging out this blog I wrote for ECRE 6 years ago about the myth of the economic pull factor for asylum seekers -the myth that very much never dies! ecre.org/op-ed-pull-f...

This is an interesting proposal from Future Governance Forum on how Asylum Management Centres could address small boat Channel crossings. I'd be interested to know what people think of this. www.futuregovernanceforum.co.uk/2025/05/15/w...

Really excited to see this textbook go to press! 'The modern world after colonialism: remaking the social sciences' comes out of the Connected Sociologies Curriculum Project (lnkd.in/eAeY-9_H). It shows what difference taking colonialism seriously means for a range of topics, aimed at first year UGs

Great article from @vickytaylor in @opendemocracy on Labour's new one in one our policy: "Labour has done what they said they wouldn’t – introduce performative gimmicks to convince voters they’re in ‘control’ of migration." www.opendemocracy.net/en/beyond-tr...

I hear that Macron has been talking about how the UK needs to do more to remove the pull factors of welfare and work in order to stop small boat Channel crossings. This is an analysis which doesn't event flirt with reality.

What are the pull factors?

I'm looking over the Channel policy timeline on our website. It so devastatingly shows the toxic relationship between borders and irregular migration, leading to human rights violations, racism and deep deep harm to people who are seeking asylum. channelcrossings.org/home-2/timel...

The Aduril contract for the "Common Operating Picture and Command Interface Managed Service" (i.e. watchtowers) has been released by the UK Contracts Finder services. It's a £21,086,291 contract. A lot of it is redacted but you can read here:

We need to be doing more to join the dots between those who profit from war, and those who profit from bordering. A good example is Anduril Industries, the military tech company.

The environment plays a big role in making & hiding borders in Calais. Man made lakes, nature reserves, and deforestation all play a role in securing the border. How can we make sense of environmentalism as bordering? We wrote an essay trying to understand this journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

I co-edited the Sage Handbook of Global Sociology a couple of years ago and there are so many brilliant chapters that taught me so much. Esp on blockchain, space technology, and environmental extraction. It's super expensive but good for libraries! uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/th... Highlights:
