I hadn't heard that Dale Spender had died. I was thrilled to be able to spend some time with her while she visited Cheris Kramarae at University of Illinois in the 1990s. I especially loved her & her sister Lynne's book of letters, Scribbling Sisters. An important and kind person.

Radway, Women Read the Romance: Interpretiver eadingi s an unproblematica ctivity for these students of the romance because they too assume that the text has intrinsic power to coerce all cooperative readers into discovering the core of meaning that is undeniably there in the book. Moreover, because their analysis proceeds under the assumption that a literary work's objective reality remains unchanged despite differences among individual readers and in the attention they devote to the text, these critics understandably assume further that their own reading of a given literary form can stand as the representativeo f all adequater eadingso f it. Finally,t hey assume also that their particular reading can then become the object of further cultural analysis that seeks to explain the popularity of the form and its appeal to its audience. In the end, they produce their explanation merely by positing a desire in the reading audience for the specific meaning they have unearthed.

Great news on the legal front for text and data mining in the US: the copyright office just agreed to renew the DMCA exemption we were granted in 2021!

It's far from perfect (as we wrote up for the Data-Sitters Club) but we've got it for 3 more years.
