Walked by this spectacular house in central Tokyo and had to get up real close to confirm that yes the entire exterior is sugi ban cladding. Stunning. (Yes I touched the walls)

Reading Perlstein’s “Nixonland” and learning of the huge reactionary resistance to social change in the 60s. The intensity of it is remarkable and familiar. I had to look up the Miami Rally For Decency when 30k+teenagers rallied outraged by Jim Morrison. Too funny. Too ridiculous. So sad.

Birds are not far behind cats as perfect animals. Here a northern flicker feasts on suet.

Aerial view of King Cinder. That’s a 16-inch circumference btw.

Electronic Arts in Vancouver made perfect skating terrain and then posted these dumb “no skating” warnings. I’m sorry, but that s$&t’s getting skated. Just look at it!

FC Taiwan jersey. Shop owner in Taipei objected to that whole “Chinese Taipei” thing and carries a renegade province jersey as a protest. Represent.

Enjoying the season.

Japanese colonial-era city planning evident in the buildings and streets around the train station in Pingtung, Taiwan. Gotta look close to see the Art Deco design under the many additions. The signature roundabout is still in use.

Taipei’s walk-ups get a bad rap. But look at these semi-open stairwells! These were on a single block!

The Japanese colonial-era Navy officer housing cluster called Ziqiang Shequ (apologies for Pinyin) in Kaohsiung. Avoided the bulldozers. Amazing houses tucked against Gu Mountain. Gonna have to dig into this one. So few such hamlets remain inhabited in TW.

I also can’t help but admire the absolutely wild southern TW temple architecture. Makes rococo look austere.

Checking out the residences of General Sun Liren in Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Lots of great 20C preservation work being done in TW.

Often reminded to look up in Taipei lest I miss the interesting buildings. Here, amid corrugated siding and bare concrete, is a colonial-era gem with a great relief detail spotted on a small side street in Beitou.
