Reading about protests in Berkeley for the TPUSA “event” and I see this quote from a Kirk supporter.

These people are so fucking stupid. Do you think civil war is like a Disney movie? “I’m honestly ok with it” as though you’re talking about settling for pizza instead of Chinese food.

35% of people choosing to pack up and move house does not imply that most are “very pleased”. Moving is AWFUL and people usually have to be pushed pretty far before they do it.
When I spoke with Joseph Lubeck, he vigorously denied that American Landmark's practices are predatory, claiming that "most residents are very pleased" and that 65 percent renew their leases. But he confirmed that rent increases and displacement are part of the company's strategy. "When we take over a property, the first analysis we do is: How much is the rent going to go up, and how many can afford to stay?" Lubeck said. "We typically raise the rent anywhere from $100 to $400, so some people are absolutely displaced. Some people paying $1,000 in a distressed apartment are not going to be able to afford the $1,400 we're going to charge."

In two weeks we will see this didn’t actually accomplish anything for healthcare but just gave Trump a W and cemented the long-term cuts of our remaining safety nets.
Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator for Connecticut, told reporters that he would vote against the funding measure but suggested there could be enough Democratic support to pass it. "I am unwilling to accept a vague promise of a vote at some indeterminate time, on some undefined measure that extends the healthcare tax credits," Blumenthal said. "The Senate might get a vote" on the health insurance credits, Ben Ray Luján, a New Mexico Democrat, said. "I'll emphasize 'might' But is Speaker Johnson gonna do anything? Is the president gonna do anything?" Mike Johnson, the Republican House speaker, has previously said he would not hold a vote on a plan to extend the tax credits that make health insurance affordable for millions of Americans who are not insured through their employers.

Eichmann 'never realised what he was doing' due to an 'inability... to think from the standpoint of somebody else'. Lacking this particular cognitive ability, he 'commit[ted] crimes under circumstances that made it well-nigh impossible for him to know or to feel that he [was] doing wrong'.

The ACA’s backbone is Republican friendly things like the individual mandate and forcing people into private insurance markets rather than a complete single-payer system.

Obama himself said the plan draws significantly from the Heritage Foundation! (You know them, the Project 2025 folks.)
Obama told host Matt Lauer that "when you actually look at the bill itself, it incorporates all sorts of Republican ideas. I mean a lot of commentators have said this is sort of similar to the bill that Mitt Romney, the Republican governor and now presidential candidate, passed in Massachusetts. A lot of the ideas in terms of the exchange, just being able to pool and improve the purchasing power of individuals in the insurance market, that originated from the Heritage Foundation....

You’re disingenuously rewriting history. Obama modeled the ACA on Romneycare BECAUSE it was GOP-lite. He (mistakenly) believed that because it was a Republican idea they would be on board. It’s another example of Dems thinking they are bargaining in good faith with the other side.
But that's—that wasn't available; we weren't starting from scratch. So what did I then do? I said, well, where is a system out there that seems to be providing coverage for everybody that politically we could actually get through a Congress and where we could get Republican support? And lo and behold, in Massachusetts there was a plan that had been designed on a bipartisan basis—including by a Republican Governor who ultimately became the nominee for the Republican Party-that came close to providing universal coverage. And I would have thought, since this was an idea that had previously gotten a lot of Republican support, that it would continue to get a lot of Republican support. And yet, somehow, magically, the minute we said this is a great idea and it's working, Republicans said this is terrible and we don't want to do this. [Laughter]

Even if she WAS guilty it’s clearly nothing but fishing, but I’m dying that the case hinges on property rented to a family member and that she DOES use it personally.
All of which is why, last Saturday, I took particular interest in a New York Times story about the Norfolk home at the center of the James case. The report revealed that the property is occupied by James's grand-niece, Nakia Thompson. Several times a year, the report said, James stays at the property with Thompson and her children, who have lived there since James purchased the home in 2020. The Times further reported that Thompson appeared before a Norfolk grand jury in June, testifying that "she had lived in the house for years and that she did not pay rent." According to the report, Thompson was not asked to testify again, and the grand jury that voted to indict James was seated in Alexandria rather than Norfolk. As I saw it, the Times report tended to undermine the indictment's central claim: that James used the home as a "rental investment property. The evidence, assuming the Times report is accurate, would be exculpatory, I reasoned, in that it tends to show that James did not primarily use the property as a means to collect rent.

Thank you. This thread makes me feel insane. Biden refused to exercise any leverage over Israel and push through this deal. Everyone is treating Biden as smol bean president uwu who had no ability to influence Israel. That’s counter to reality.
From PBS: But it is also true that the Biden administration - and this is something that Biden administration officials are going to have to face and have to account for — did not exercise the leverage that they possessed. They had huge leverage with Israel. President Biden was extremely popular with the Israeli public right after October 7, so he had that leverage, political leverage. And, of course, they had the leverage of the provision of weapons. You can't say that you're working tirelessly for a cease-fire and continue to provide the weapons that ensure that the fire continues. That is simply inconsistent. So, yes, they had the kind of leverage that, had they wanted to, they could have called Prime Minister Netanyahu out, which they didn't want to do. They didn't want to take tough votes at the Security Council, and, most of all, they didn't want to withhold or condition the provision of weapons. Again, I agree that President Trump faced more favorable circumstances, but there's a lot of leverage that the Biden administration had and they simply refused to exercise.

Almost like we have seen this play out before.
The fire was used to promote the "Reichstag Fire Decree," which suspended all civil liberties and democratic rights, including: habeas corpus, privacy of the mail and telephone, freedom of expression and the press, the right to public assembly, and protections against search and seizure in relations to homes and property. Opposition leaders were arrested. All these draconian measures were used to allow Hitler to rule by decree.

Latinos did not “overwhelmingly” vote for Trump. Only white men did that.
Voting demographics from the last 3 general elections. Hispanics as a whole were +3 in favor of Harris. White men were the only demographic what was “overwhelmingly” (+20) in favor of Trump.

My understanding of the issue is that most blue states have non-partisan districting, so it’s a lot harder for them to redistrict with an outcome in mind. Meanwhile, red states leave that power up to the legislature, so they can more or less just make the changes at will.
POLITICO Republicans hold a clear advantage in the arms race: The GOP is poised to move forward with redistricting in Florida, Ohio, Missouri and Indiana, which could yield at least half a dozen more seats. Democrats, meanwhile, have struggled to get gerrymandering efforts moving in blue states beyond California, though leaders in New York, Illinois and Maryland say they are weighing options.

But when it comes to tax cuts they suddenly don't mind "everyone benefiting".
