Or, in states where juries must be "death-qualified" (jurors can be struck if they don't believe in the death penalty), you get deeply biased juries for the fact/guilt phase.

I frankly haven't bothered to dig deep and try to understand bc I just didn't buy the very first step - "I realized I'm an ontological realist about math and therefore logical consistency requires that I become a devout Catholic" is nonsense, I'm sorry

Leah was my roommate in college and I'm more and more appalled at her transformation every time I hear about her. She's so smart and yet so lost.

Dhoom Machale - I had to look it up, I don't know Bollywood as well as I should. And that's why I loved it - he refused to be constrained by the assumption that a political spectacle needs to appeal to the limited cultural competencies of default whiteness as a lowest common denominator.

What a fantastic choice of exit music, too. A choice as unapologetic and proudly uncompromising in its joyful conviction as everything he said out loud.

That's so Nynaeve though - she needs to be the caretaker for her friends, she will never abandon them no matter how good the reasons, and to hell with anyone who calls her hypocritical for it!

I think you meant saidar (and the fact that it's easy to get them mixed up means the show did the right thing not to rely on those words too much) - but yeah!! Look out for Scout Storey's forthcoming book on trans readings of WoT!

Look out for another batch of videos on Lezbi Nerdy's YouTube channel about the soundtrack motifs. Might be a while until we record, but I've analyzed S3 now and we're going to talk a lot about all the ways the Aiel music is developed!

"Robot" is the Czech word for "slave." It was coined by Karel Capek in his 1920 play about mechanical slaves. Humans have been trying to sound the alarm about this idea since the beginning!

I appreciate your points and agree! I think I had the pundit class in mind in particular. It's just interesting to me that THIS is everyone's five alarm fire. Kinda shows where the sympathies and priorities are.

But yeah, people finally coming to the realization things have crossed lines? Great!

Relatedly - it feels like the outage regarding a cancelled comedy show is dwarfing the outrage over Mahmoud Khalil's detention months ago, and ironically it's also drowning out news from yesterday about a new deportation order against him.

Congrats, so happy for both of you!

The chaos of civil war and statelessness is horrific, but so is fascism, and by the time it's locked in, it will be too late to negotiate it away without violence. 5/5

What's my point? Idk, I guess I just hope that we're careful not to lend a default sheen of legitimacy to political violence currently being enacted by the state by contrasting it with violence by non-state actors. 4/x

To say nothing of the genocide and ethnic cleansing being aided and abetted by an "ally" in occupied Palestine, as well as the genocides being effectively ignored (which is itself a violation of international law) in Sudan and Congo. 3/x

Note how Ezra Klein's list of political violence incidents didn't include the folks who have died while held by ICE with no due process, the utterly illegal execution of Venezuelans, the illegal deployment of the National Guard, the preventable deaths resulting from healthcare policy... 2/x

When you say regressive, are you talking about the weird gender stuff? I think there's a way to read some of that against the grain, but yeah, pretty sure that's a flaw of the author's perspective - especially if he actually believes what he's said about the Uyghurs...

Vysehrad? Are y'all doing another scavenger hunt there, or just exploring?

PS - highly recommend listening to Smetana's Vysehrad at the Vysehrad and Vltava while cruising or walking along the Vltava. And/or, listen to some Dvorak at his grave in the Vysehrad cemetery!

I'm very curious what you mean, I love seeing how the show's changes (which I'm generally very positive about) affect people's theories as they read for the first time - would you mind telling me in rot13 for spoiler avoidance?

I'd say the Tencent adaptation was a lesson in "be careful what you wish for" with strict adaptations. Hardcore 3BP fans might enjoy it, but it would absolutely bore the tears out of a general audience who isn't already invested. Sometimes brevity is a virtue. That said, still worth watching!
