I hope this can be a happy ending for those vulnerable folks who are realizing what they asked for. I hope they see how much we need an actual caring community infrastructure. I hope this unhinged flurry of orders they asked for scares them into class solidarity.

At that moment, when the illusions of Jareth's violence are shattered, and Sara sees just how powerful she really is, even if she asked for this violence in a state of vulnerability, she sees how to be free. And she GETS free. She also finds community.

The final dialogue between Jareth and Sara is what's really sticking to me. Jareth keeps reminding Sara "you asked me for this! Stop complaining it's not fair!" which is almost a clever leverage move for him. Until she realizes:"you have no power over me!"

She's a bit shocked he actually did what she asked in a moment of frustration! But as this is a child's film, albeit a coded one which is popular with adults, it has a happy ending.

The Goblin King preys on her vulnerability and instead of someone teaching Sara about her social conditions [gender expectations, frustration at lack of community resources], he does something he knows is violent (in this case takes her brother away).

The film begins with a desperate teen who is neglected by her dad and step mom [my reading of it] and carrying some of the weight of her step mom's postpartum issues. She's frustrated by adult responsibilities she senses she can't handle. In a moment of frustration, she calls on The Goblin King.
